The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced on Thursday that Seoul National University of Education will open a Ph.D. program to strengthen the expertise of elementary school teachers starting next year, according to news sources.

Until now, students at the university could only study up to a masters.

The Ministry of Education will receive applications until the end of October from other schools that want a doctoral program in primary education. It will decide at the beginning of November which schools it will approve.

Selected schools will have to reduce the undergraduate student count by two students or the master’s student count by one-and-a-half students for every Ph.D. student.

These schools will be able to start recruitment in March.

내년부터 교대에 박사과정 생긴다


교육과학기술부는 초등교사의 전문성을 강화하기 위해 내년 교대에 박사과정 개설을 허용키로 했다고 30일 밝혔다.

교대는 지금까지 석사 과정의 특수대학원만 운영할 수 있었다.

교과부는 이날부터 다음 달 말까지 박사과정 개설을 원하는 학교의 신청을 받고 교원확보 현황ㆍ시설 등을 심사해 통과 시 11월 초 전문대학원(석ㆍ박사 과정) 설립 승인을 해줄 예정이다.

선정 학교는 기존의 학부생 2명 또는 석사과정 1.5명을 줄여야 박사과정 1명 정원을 받을 수 있다. 내년 3월 신입생부터 모집할 수 있다.
