Controversial religious leader oversaw a vast business empire


Rev. Moon Sun-myung, the founder of the Unification Church and a business mogul, died shortly before 2 a.m. on Monday morning. He was 92.

Moon died at a church-owned hospital in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province. His wife, Han Hak-ja, and children were at his side, the church said.

Moon’s funeral is scheduled to take place on Sept. 15 at CheongShim Peace World Center, an indoor arena that can accommodate up to 25,000 people, also in Gapyeong. He will be put to rest at a mountainside grave in the same city. Gapyeong is considered the holy place of the Unification Church.

Moon Hyung-jin, the youngest son of the church founder and the Unification Church international president, will preside over funeral committees around the world, the organization said in a press statement. Moon’s wake will be open to the followers and the general public for eight days, from Sept. 6-13.

Born in Jeongju, North Pyeongyang Province in today’s North Korea, on March 6, 1920, Moon founded the Unification Church in 1954. Today, the controversial church has mission centers in 194 countries and is said to have 3 million followers around the world. In Korea, it claims a membership of some 200,000 and about 200 churches.

Moon was a business mogul with a vast business empire stretching from Korea to the United States, where he lived for some 30 years. Ilhwa, Yongpyong Resort and the Segye Times are some of his business interests in Korea. In the United States, the Unification Church is associated with the Washington Times, United Press International and the New Yorker Hotel, a New York landmark.

In 1991, Moon visited North Korea and met with then North Korean leader Kim Il-sung. The Unification Church runs Pyeonghwa Motors, an automobile plant in North Korea, in a joint venture.

The Unification Church is also engaged in various educational and cultural activities, such as the Sunhwa Arts School, Sunhwa Arts High School, CheongShim International Academy, Cheongsim International High School and Sun Moon University. The Little Angels, a performance troupe of young girls, and the Universal Ballet Company are also associated with the Unification Church.

In 2008, Moon Hyung-jin succeeded his father as the leader of the Unification Church. The fourth son of the founder, Moon Kook-jin, holds the title of Tongil Group chairman and oversees the business concerns of the church. It is reported that the trio of the two sons and Han Hak-ja, who acted as co-chairwoman of the church alongside her husband, will lead the Unification Church.

통일교 창시자 문선명 총재 별세

통일교 창시자인 문선명 총재가 3일 오전 1시54 분 통일교 성지인 경기도 가평에서 별세했다. 향년 92세.

안호열 통일그룹 대외협력실장은 "문 총재가 오늘 새벽 경기 가평의 청심국제병원에서 성화(聖和)했다"고 밝혔다.

문 총재는 지난달 14일 감기와 폐렴으로 인한 합병증으로 가톨릭대 서울성모병원에 입원해 치료를 받다 현대의학으로 병세 호전이 불가능하다는 진단에 따라 31일 가평 청심국제병원으로 옮겨졌다.

고인은 1920년 1월6일 평안북도 정주에서 태어났으며 일본 와세다대 전기학과를 졸업하고 6.25 전쟁 휴전 다음해인 1954년 통일교를 창시했다.

1957년 일본을 시작으로 해외 선교의 닻을 올린 통일교는 1972년 미국에 진출, 해외 선교를 본격화하는 등 불과 50여년 만에 전세계 194개국 300여만명의 신도를 거느린 종교 단체로 성장했다.

하지만 고인 자신을 '메시아'로 보는 통일교의 교리 때문에 늘 이단 시비에 휘말렸으며 이승만 정권 시절을 비롯, 모두 6차례나 수감 생활을 하기도 했다.

문 총재는 이단 시비를 비롯한 각종 논란에도 막강한 자금력을 바탕으로 고도의 사업 수완을 발휘해 전세계에서 다양한 사업을 벌여왔다.

선화예술중고교, 청심국제중고교를 비롯한 교육기관과 세계일보, 미국 통신사 UPI 등 언론기관, 일화, 용평리조트 등도 문 총재가 운영하는 곳이다.

'세계평화'라는 화두에 일생을 바친 고인은 1991년 12월 북한 김일성 주석을 만 나 남북정상회담과 이산가족 상봉, 금강산 개발을 비롯한 남북경제교류에 합의했고, 2010년에는 유엔을 대체할 평화 기구로 '부모 유엔'을 창설했다.

지난 1991년 11월10일자 영국 선데이타임스는 '20세기를 만든 1천명의 인물'로 이승만 대통령, 북한 김일성 주석과 함께 문 총재를 선정하기도 했다.

문 총재는 지난 2009년 1월30일 90세 생일을 맞아 경기도 가평군 설악면  '천주 청평수련원'에서 구순연을 열었으며, 같은해 3월 처음으로 자서전 형식의 에세이집 '평화를 사랑하는 세계인으로'를 냈다.

2008년 4월 7남6녀 중 막내아들인 문형진(33) 목사를 통일교 세계회장으로 임명 해 사실상 후계 구도를 갖췄다. 통일교 재단 이사장 겸 통일그룹 회장은 4남 문국진(42) 씨가 맡은 상태다.

고인은 고령에도 지난 7월 피스컵 축구대회에서 개회선언 및 우승컵 시상을 직접 했고 매달 한국과 미국을 오가며 왕성한 선교 활동을 벌여온 것으로 알려졌다.

하지만 지난 7월 16일 미국에서 귀국한 이후 심한 감기 증상을 보였고, 이후 서 울성모병원 중환자실에서 치료를 받아왔다.

석준호 통일교 한국협회장은 지난달 30일 "사실 (문 총재가) 각종 기계의 도움을 받아 생명을 유지하는 상태"라며 "인공기계에 의해 생산된 산소공급이 없이는 생 명을 유지할 수 없는 단계에까지 치달았다"고 설명한 바 있다.

통일교 측은 문 총재의 부인 한학자(69) 여사와 자녀들이 임종을 지켰다고 전했 다.

빈소는 청심평화월드센터에 마련되며 장례는 13일장으로 치러질 것으로 알려졌다.

통일교 측은 이날 오전 내부 회의를 열어 향후 장례 절차와 장지 등을 결정할 예정이다.
