Um Hong-gil, a prominent South Korean climber who was the world’s first to scale the globe’s 16 tallest mountains, will accompany President Lee Myung-bak on his upcoming Arctic trip as a symbolic move to underscore the seriousness of climate change, officials said Thursday.

Lee is scheduled to visit Greenland next week for talks with Premier Kuupik Kleist about green growth, resource development and other issues. Lee plans to travel to Ilulissat, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its famous ice fjord, to take a first-hand look at the problems resulting from global warming there.

Um, 52, who in 2007 completed climbs of the 16 highest peaks, will be among three special members of Lee’s entourage, along with famous cartoonist Hur Young-man and a college student chosen for his enthusiasm about green growth, the presidential office said in a statement.

In recent years, Um has worked as an environmental activist and his joining Lee’s entourage is aimed at underlining the spirit of challenge and to raise awareness of the importance of the environment and the seriousness of global warming.

Cartoonist Hur has also expressed extraordinary interest in the Arctic. When late mountaineer Park Young-seok reached the North Pole in 2005, Hur traveled to the Arctic to congratulate him, the office said. (Yonhap News)

대통령, 산악인, 만화가 함께 북극간다


이명박 대통령의 북극 지역 순방에 만화가 허영만 씨와 산악인 엄홍길 씨가 동행한다고 6일 청와대가 밝혔다.

이들은 특별수행원 자격으로 이 대통령과 함께 북극 빙하지대의 기후변화 현장을 시찰하고 관련 행사에도 참석할 예정이다.

이 대통령은 7일부터 시작하는 아시아태평양경제협력체(APEC) 정상회의 참석 후 9∼12일 그린란드와 노르웨이 순방에서 유네스코(UNESCO) 세계 자연유산으로 지정된 일룰리사트 기후변화 현장을 시찰하고 지구온난화 대책 등을 논의할 예정이다.

‘각시탈’, ‘식객’, ‘타짜’의 작가인 허씨는 2005년 고(故) 박영석 대장의 북극점 정복 당시 북극까지 직접 찾아갈 만큼 미지의 세계를 개척하는 데 남다른 관심을 보여왔다.

최근에는 몽골 칭기즈칸을 소재로 ‘말에서 내리지 않은 무사’를 완성했다.

엄 씨는 세계 최초로 8천m 16좌를 성공적으로 완등해 우리나라를 대표하는 산악인으로 평가받는다. 그는 지난 수년간 ‘환경파수꾼’으로 활약하기도 했다.

이밖에 대학생 대표로 북극 순방에 참가하는 신수민 씨(23)는 대통령직속 녹색성장위원회가 주관하는 ‘그린 칼리지’ 프로그램에서 우수한 활동을 보여 포함됐다.

김상협 청와대 녹색성장기획관은 “이번 북극 방문에는 새로운 길을 열어 지평을 넓히는 이른바 코리아 루트를 개척하는 선언의 의미가 담겨 있다”면서 “극지 개척에 남다른 관심과 열정을 보여 온 인사들을 초청했다”고 말했다.
