Two South Korean volunteer workers were killed and three others injured in a lightning accident in Sri Lanka, a state aid agency said Sunday.

The two -- a 22-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman -- were killed by lightning on Saturday evening in the mountainous Haputale region in the central part of Sri Lanka, according to Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), a state-funded agency in charge of overseas volunteer program.

They were visiting the house of another fellow volunteer in Haputale at the time of the fatal accident, the agency and a wire report said. Three other South Korean volunteers, who accompanied them on the visit, were injured and sent to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to the report.

KOICA said an official has been dispatched from its office in Sri Lanka to look into the accident while family members of the dead workers plan to depart for Sri Lanka on Sunday.

한국인 봉사단원 2명 번개맞아 사망


스리랑카에서 활동하던 한국국제협력단(KOICA) 봉사단원 2명이 6일(현지시간) 낙뢰로 사망했다.

KOICA와 신화통신에 따르면 KOICA 봉사단원 5명이 이날 오후 5시30분께 스리랑카 중부의 산악지대인 하푸탈레 지역에서 낙뢰에 맞아 김모(22•남)씨와  장모(24• 여)씨가 숨지고 다른 3명이 부상해 인근 병원으로 이송됐다.

이들은 사고 당시 동료 단원의 집을 찾았다가 변을 당한 것으로 확인됐다.

하푸탈레는 수도 콜롬보로부터 동남부 지역에 있으며 차량으로 약 6시간 거리에 있다.

KOICA는 현지 사무소 소장을 사고 현장에 긴급 파견하고 '사고 긴급 대책반(반장 김용표 WFK 본부장)'을 구성, 사고수습에 대처하고 있다고 밝혔다.

유족과 다른 단원들의 보호자는 7일 현지로 출발할 예정이다.

스리랑카 재난관리국에 따르면 지난해 낙뢰 피해로 총 30명이 목숨을 잃었으며, 당초 숨진 사람들은 중국인으로 알려졌지만 신원 확인 결과 한국인이었다고 신화 통신은 보도했다.
