Police have caught three members of a sex trafficking ring who smuggled Korean women to the United States and forced them to work as prostitutes, the Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency said Thursday.

Police requested an arrest warrant for 47-year-old man on charges running the sex trafficking ring and booked two of his accomplices without physical detention. The remaining six members of the ring have been put on the wanted list.

Yu and the others allegedly arranged for the illegal entry of five Korean women to the U.S. via Canada and Mexico.

The suspects lured victims by telling them that they could make 10 million won ($8,966) a month just by waiting tables. But when the victims arrived in the U.S., their passports were taken away and they were forced to work as prostitutes in Hawaii.

The Korean police are expanding the investigation to other sex trafficking rings.

경기경찰청 광역수사대는 여성들을 미국으로 밀입국시킨 뒤 성매매를 하도록 한 혐의(국외이송유인 등)로 국외송출 총책 유모(47)씨에 대해 구속영장을 신청했다고 11일 밝혔다.

또 여종업원 공급책인 유씨 누나(50•하와이 유흥업소 업주), 밀입국 브로커 박모(49)씨 등 2명을 불구속 입건했다.

경찰은 이들과 공모한 하와이 현지 유흥업주 고모(56•여)씨와 브로커 등 6명을 지명수배하고 이와 별도로 미국 국토안보부와 인터폴에 통보했다.

총책 유씨 등은 2007년부터 최근까지 우리나라 20-30대 여성 5명을 캐나다와 멕시코를 경유해 미국으로 밀입국시킨 뒤 하와이 유흥업소로 보내 성매매를 하도록 한 혐의를 받고 있다.

유씨는 현지 업주로부터 소개비로 여성 1명당 50만~100만원씩 챙겼는가 하면 피해 여성들에게 받은 돈으로 예매한 귀국 항공권을 환불받아 1명당 100만원씩 가로채 기도 한 것으로 조사됐다.

이들은 피해여성들을 직접 만나 "미국에 가면 서빙만 해도 한달에 1천만원을 벌 수 있다"고 속이거나 포털 게시판 등에 '홀서빙 월 400만~600만원 해외취업 알바'라는 허위 글을 올려 여성을 모집했다.

피해 여성들은 밀입국 직후 여권을 빼앗기고 유흥업소로 보내져 업주로부터 채무 2천만원을 떠안고 성매매를 강요당한 것으로 밝혀졌다.

이들은 하와이 유흥업소에서 탈출한 피해 여성이 있다는 첩보를 입수한 경찰의 수사로 덜미가 잡혔다.

경찰은 미국 현지 브로커를 통해 밀입국을 시도하다가 추방당한 피해자들이 더 있는 정황을 잡고 수사를 확대하고 있다.
