Another act of vandalism hit South Korea's consulate general in New York after two similar cases claiming Japan's ownership of the South Korean islets of Dokdo affected the diplomatic mission and a South Korean monument in New Jersey, consulate officials said Saturday.

The South Korean consulate in Manhattan said its officials found a white wooden stake reading Dokdo "belongs to Japanese territory" at the entrance of its consular section office on Saturday. The consulate reported it to the police, they said.

It was only one day after a sticker carrying the same slogan was found pasted at the same place at the South Korean consulate in New York.

On Friday, a similar wooden stake was found placed beside a monument in Palisades Park in New Jersey, installed in 2010 to commemorate Korean women, euphemistically called "comfort women,"

who were forced into sexual slavery under Japanese military rule during World War II.

"The post as well as the sticker (found under the signboard) were immediately reported to the police and we also requested the police find out the culprit and strengthen vigilance in the consular section office areas," the consulate said.

The consulate also said the police in New York are looking into the possible motive behind the series of vandalism incidents.

A similar act of vandalism occurred in mid-June in Seoul when a right-wing Japanese activist set up a provocative wooden stake beside a bronze statue of a young girl in front of the Japanese embassy.

The bronze statue symbolizes Korean "comfort women" and was installed by former victims and their supporters.

South Korea keeps a small police detachment on Dokdo, the country's easternmost islets, effectively controlling them. Japan's claims of ownership of the islets have long stirred diplomatic tensions between the two neighboring countries. (Yonhap News)

'독도는 일본 땅’ 이틀새 3건, 한인들 분노


미국 뉴욕과 뉴저지 일대에서 한국의 독도와 관련한 반한(反韓) 사건이 잇따라 발생하고 있어 지역 한인사회가 분노하고 있다.

미국 경찰은 동일한 사건이 잇따라 일어남에 따라 배후에 대한 수사를 벌이고 있다.

뉴욕총영사관은 27일(현지시간) 맨해튼에 있는 민원실 현판 밑에 '죽도(竹島)는

일본 고유의 영토'라는 문구가 적힌 하얀색 푯말이 놓여 있는 것을 발견하고 경찰에 신고했다고 밝혔다.

전날 '日本國竹島'(독도는 일본 땅이라는 의미) 라는 문구가 인쇄된 스티커가 발견된 장소와 같다. 죽도(다케시마)는 일본이 독도를 부르는 말이다.

뉴욕과 뉴저지에서는 이틀 새 3건의 반한 사건이 잇따라 발생했다.

지난 26일 뉴저지주 팰리세이즈파크(팰팍)시의 위안부 기림비에서는 독도가 일본 땅이라고 씌여 있는 말뚝과 푯말이 발견됐고 같은 날 뉴욕총영사관 민원실 현판 밑에 '日本國竹島' 스티커가 붙어 있는 사건이 발생했다.

뉴욕총영사관은 민원실 현판 밑에서 발견된 푯말은 전날 팰팍 위안부 기림비 옆 에서 말뚝과 함께 발견된 푯말과 같은 종류였다고 설명했다.

총영사관의 전성오 홍보관은 "어제 스티커 사건에 이어 푯말 사건도 경찰에 즉각 신고했고 범인 색출과 총영사관 민원실 주변의 경계 강화를 경찰에 요청했다"고 말했다.

총영사관의 다른 관계자는 "경찰이 자체 정보 부서를 통해 이들 사건의 배후에 대한 수사를 하고 있다"고 전했다.

뉴욕과 뉴저지 교민들 사이에서는 비슷한 사건이 잇따라 발생했고 푯말도 비슷 하다는 점 등을 근거로 의도적이고 계획된 사건일 수 있다며 일본인의 소행일 가능 성이 있다는 얘기들이 나오고 있다.

위안부 기림비가 있는 팰팍의 제임스 로툰도 시장은 전날 기자회견에서 말뚝 사 건을 미국 시민을 향한 '야만적 테러'로 규정하고 "조사를 통해 인종이나 증오 관련 범죄로 확인되면 상응하는 조치를 하겠다"며 "뉴욕 경찰과 공조를 통해 이들 사건의 연관성과 조직적인 범죄 여부를 확인해보겠다"고 말했다.
