Farmers hold sit-in protest at GNP lawmakers’ offices

Farmers staged sit-in protests at five regional offices of lawmakers of the Grand National Party on Wednesday, demanding the conservative ruling party drop its move to ratify the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement.

Protesters had occupied offices of three more GNP legislators, including Rep. Lee Sang-deuk, the older brother of President Lee Myung-bak, but they dispersed in the afternoon after they conveyed their demand to the lawmakers’ aides.

“The protests are to denounce the GNP, which is moving to ratify the FTA that will surely devastate the local agricultural industry,” said an official at the Korea Farmers’ League’s branch for North Gyeongsang Province, which organized the protests.

“We will mount a campaign against those lawmakers who vote in favor of the deal during general elections in April,” the official said.

The group said it plans to continue the sit-in till Thursday and then will head for Seoul to join an anti-FTA rally.

경북전농, 국회의원 사무실 5곳 점거농성

한미 자유무역협정(FTA) 국회 비준 반대를 주장 하는 전국농민회총연맹(전농) 경북도연맹은 9일 지역별 한나라당 국회의원 사무실에 서 농성에 들어갔다.

전농 경북도연맹 소속 각 시군 농민회원들은 이날 오후 5시 현재 안동의 김광림 의원 사무실을 비롯해 성윤환(상주) 이인기(고령ㆍ성주) 장윤석(영주) 강석호(봉화) 의원 등의 사무실에서 농성 중이다.

정해걸(의성ㆍ청송) 정희수(영천) 이상득(포항) 의원의 사무실에서는 농성을 벌 인 뒤 의원의 비준 반대 입장을 전해듣고 해제하거나 반대의견을 전달했다.

최경환(경산) 의원 사무실에서는 경찰이 배치된 탓에 농성 대신 FTA 규탄 기자 회견에 이어 항의서한을 전했고 이한성(예천) 의원 사무실은 이전부터 반대 입장을 표명해 농성대상에서 제외됐다.

이밖에 전농 도연맹은 대구시내 소재 한나라당 경북도ㆍ대구시당사 앞에서 천막 농성을 펼치고 있다.

도연맹의 한 관계자는 "이번 점거농성은 농업분야에 막대한 피해를 입히는 한미 FTA를 국회에서 비준하려는 한나라당을 규탄하기 위한 것"이라며 "오는 10일 오전까 지 비준 반대의사를 표명하지 않은 국회의원에 대해 내년 총선에서 낙천대상자로 선 정하겠다"고 말했다.

도연맹은 10일까지 점거농성을 한 후 서울로 이동해 전국 집회에 합류할 예정이 다.

한편 한국농업경영인 경북도연합회는 지역 국회의원들을 상대로 비준거부 동의 서명을 받으면서 10일 서울에서 열리는 별도의 전국 집회에 참석할 예정이다. (연합뉴스)
