South Korea made more of the world's top-selling products in 2013 than a year earlier, raising its ranking by a notch, the country's trade association said Wednesday.

Asia's fourth-largest economy had 65 best sellers in the global market, placing 12th, compared with 63 in 2012 and 61 in 2011, according to a report from the Korea International Trade Association. Its ranking also rose from 14 and 15 in 2012 and 2011, respectively.

China topped the list with 1,538 items that sold the most in 2013, followed by Germany with 733 products, the United States with 550, Italy with 216 and Japan with 186.

South Korea's chemical industry had 21 products on the world's No. 1 list with 11 best-selling steel products and eight in the textile industry.

Forty-four items including memory chips and auto components retained their global market grip for two years in a row, while 19 products slipped from the highest position in 2013.

"South Korea has to raise its competitiveness against the U.S., China and Japan to take over the No. 1 titles in the second- or third-best items and also needs to expand its pool of world-best products," KITA said in the report. (Yonhap)
