The flick will be directed by Jang Jun-hwan, best known for science fiction cult classic “Save the Green Planet.” The star-studded cast includes big names such as Kang Dong-won, Ha Jung-woo and Kim Yun-seok.

Ha and Kim Tae-ri starred together in last year’s critically acclaimed “Handmaiden” from director Park Chan-wook.

Set in the same year as the title, “1987” will follow events that take took place during the politically turbulent year under the iron-fisted rule of Chun Doo-hwan. The torture and death of student protester Park Jong-chul triggered what came to be called the “June Struggle,” nationwide pro-democracy protests that ultimately brought down the authoritarian regime of Chun.
