Hwang has been unmarried all her life while running a kindergarten for about four decades. The devout Christian has given students scholarships through churches. In her 20s, she got acquainted with the late Go Hwang-gyeong, the first president of Seoul Women’s University, at a Christian gathering. At that time, Hwang discussed the future of the university with Go and other school officials. The school was founded in December, 1960, by the Presbyterian Church of Korea.
Hwang moved into campus housing around the middle of this month to live the rest of her life at the university.
