Several female smartphone users in South Korea have been the targets of sexual assault, raising alarms about the use of the devices on the streets.

According to the police, sex offenders targeted women using smartphones or wearing earphones.

Police arrested a man who sexually harassed three women listening to music or surfing the Internet through their mobile devices on their way home at night. The 22-year-old man, surnamed Cho, victimized women in their 20s in Anyang and Uiwang, both in Gyeonggi Province, from February to March.

Police are planning to carry out an additional investigation as Cho confessed to committing 10 more such offenses in Yongin, also Gyeonggi Province, and other areas.

In another case, a man identified by his surname Choi, 38, was charged with sexually assaulting 15 women including seven minors. Most of them were attacked while returning home at night.

The offender allegedly waited for the women near bus stops when there were not many people around.

밤 길 이어폰으로 음악 듣던 여학생…위험천만

귀가하는 길에 스마트폰을 이용하는 여성들을 타깃으로 삼은 성범죄가 늘어나고 있다.

경찰은 늦은 시간 스마트폰으로 음악을 듣거나 인터넷 검색을 하는 여성3명을 성추행한 혐의로 조 씨(22)를 체포했다.

조 씨는 안양과 의왕 일대에서 20대 피해자들이 주변을 살피지 못하는 틈을 타 범죄를 저질렀다.

경찰은 조씨가 용인 등 다른 지역에서 10여차례의 범죄를 더 저질렀다고 시인하면서 수사를 확대하고 있다.

늦은 시각 귀가하는 여성들을 버스 정류장에서 기다려 성폭행한 용의자도 경찰에 의해 붙잡혔다. 

최 씨(38)는 미성년자 7명을 포함한 총 15명의 여성을 성폭행한 혐의로 체포됐으며 주로 인적이 드문 정류장을 범죄 장소로 이용한 것으로 알려졌다.
