South Korea's famous rock-ballad singer Kim Jang-hoon said Friday he hopes to build a memorial in New Jersey for Asian women forced by Japanese soldiers into sexual slavery during World War II, in cooperation with activists in other Asian countries with such victims.

"While planning a performance tour of U.S. cities this year, the idea of building a memorial like the Holocaust memorial came to mind," Kim told Yonhap News Agency by phone.

Kim said he wants to make the new facility in New Jersey, U.S., within three years, possibly through cooperation with activists in other Asian countries, many of whose people were forced into wartime sex slavery by Japan.

The plan is aimed at aggressively raising the world's awareness of the issue and ultimately drawing Japan's repentance on the past misdeeds, the singer said.

The 45-year-old star is well known for his love of Dokdo, a set of South Korean islets on the East Sea also claimed by Japan, and for donations to charity groups.

Questioned why he thinks New Jersey should be the location of the new structure, Kim said it's because the state has been the leader in the U.S. in paying great attention to the issue of former sex slaves.

The government of Bergen County, New Jersey built a monument dedicated to the former sex slaves on March 8 to mark the World Women's Day. It was the fourth monument of that kind but the first by a local government in the U.S., not by Korean-American residents.

Kim is currently in Los Angeles as part of the performance tour. He is scheduled to fly to New York on Monday and discuss constructing the new memorial in New Jersey before returning home on March 29.

Historians say that tens of thousands of Asian women, mostly Koreans, were forced to work in front-line brothels for Japanese soldiers during the war when the Korean Peninsula was a colony of Japan.

Japan has acknowledged that its wartime military used sex slaves, but it refuses to issue an apology or compensate the victims individually, arguing that the issue was settled by a 1965 treaty that normalized relations between the two countries. (Yonhap News)

가수 김장훈이 미국 뉴저지에 일본 과거사의 폐해를 알리는 위안부관 건립을 추진한다고 밝혔다.

현재 공연 차 미국 로스앤젤레스에 머물고 있는 김장훈은 22일 연합뉴스와의 국 제전화 통화에서 "올해 전미 투어를 계획하면서 홀로코스트 기념관(2차 세계대전 당 시 유대인 학살 등의 역사를 담은 기념관) 같은 위안부관을 만들어야겠다는 생각을 했다"고 설명했다.

그는 위안부관 건립 취지에 대해 "국제 사회의 공감대를 얻는 위안부 문제를 공 격적으로 부각시켜 일본의 사죄를 이끌어내야 한다"며 "일본의 사죄는 독도 문제도 우리의 방향대로 이끌어갈 토대가 될 것이다. 두 문제 모두 일본 강점의 폐해인 과거사 문제이기 때문"이라고 강조했다.

뉴저지를 택한 이유로는 "뉴저지는 미국에서도 위안부 문제에 가장 적극적으로 관심을 갖는 '메카' 같은 곳"이라고 설명했다.

실제 뉴저지주 버겐카운티 정부는 '세계 여성의 날'인 지난 8일(이하 현지시간) 일본군 위안부 기림비를 세웠다. 미국에서 네 번째 기림비이지만 한인사회가 주도한 기존 기림비와 달리 미국 지방 정부가 직접 만들었다는 의미가 있었다.

이어 뉴저지주 하원은 21일(현지시간) 본회의를 열어 2차 세계대전 당시 일본군 에 강제로 끌려간 위안부 피해자 20만 명의 고통과 희생을 기린다는 내용을 담은 결 의안을 통과시켰다.

하원은 결의에서 "'위안부'(comfort women)라는 용어는 1932∼1945년 일본군에 강제 동원된 '성노예'(sexual slavery)를 일컫는 일본 정부의 표현"이라고 전제하고 "이들 대부분은 한국과 중국인 여성들이지만 태국과 베트남, 인도네시아, 말레이시아, 필리핀, 호주, 네덜란드 등지에서도 동원됐다"고 명시했다.

김장훈은 "위안부는 한일 간의 문제가 아니라 일본과 여러 나라의 문제"라며 "여성들이 위안부로 동원되는 피해를 입은 나라들 모두 공분하고 있으니 함께 손잡고 연합해 위안부관을 만들자고 제안할 것이다. 이를 위해 미국에 있는 관련국 단체들과 접촉해 논의를 해나갈 생각이다. 한 관만 성공적으로 시작하면 전미에 퍼지리라는 희망이 있다"고 말했다.

김장훈은 오는 23일 로스앤젤레스에서 세계 최대 유방암 재단인 '수전 G. 코멘(Susan G.Kommen)' 주최로 열리는 '핑크리본 도네이션 마라톤 파티'에서 공연한다.

이어 25일 뉴욕으로 건너가 유학생들과 함께 5월 자신의 공연을 전후해 열 한글 캠페인을 준비한다. 이후 뉴저지에서 위안부관 건립 관련 논의를 한 뒤 29일 귀국한다. (연합뉴스)
