South Korea and Myanmar signed an agreement Monday to boost agriculture cooperation that partly aims to improve their food security, the South Korean government said.

The memorandum of understanding was signed by South Korea’s Agriculture Minister Lee Dong-phil and his visiting Burmese counterpart, Myint Hlaing, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Under the MOU, South Korea will further expand its “Korea Agricultural Policy Experiences for Food Security” program in the Southeast Asian country, the ministry said.

The two countries will establish a joint committee that will help increase exchanges between the countries’ officials and experts, it said.

“The MOU is expected to enable joint development of the countries’ agriculture sectors by combining Myanmar’s abundant resources with our experience, expertise and investment,” the ministry said in a press release.

The agreement will help increase South Korea’s exports of farm products and equipment to Myanmar due to a transfer of the country’s advanced farming technology. (Yonhap News)
