Seoul municipal gov't prepares team to aid devastated Japan

The Seoul metropolitan government is assembling a rescue and medical team to assist Japan in search and recovery operations following Friday's devastating earthquake and tsunami, the regional government said Sunday.

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon presided over a meeting of the municipal government officials the previous day to come up with measures to help Japan recover from the quake that struck its northeastern region and to extend a relief fund to the neighboring country, it said.

Oh also sent a letter of condolence to Tokyo Mayor Shintaro Ishihara over the deadly incident.

서울시는 13일 일본 지진피해 복구를 돕기 위해 구조 인력과 대외협력 기금을 지원할 준비를 하고 있다고 밝혔다.

오세훈 서울시장은 지난 12일 오전 일본 대지진과 관련해 긴급 대책회의를 열고 피해복구 지원책 마련과 서울의 지진 위험 대응체계 점검을 지시했다.

오 시장은 이시하라 신타로 동경도지사에게 위로 서한을 보내고 일본 국민에게 위로 전문을 전했다.

서울시는 119 구조대원과 의료·구호 지원단을 바로 파견할 수 있도록 대기시켰으며 일본과 협의를 거쳐 공공 인력이나 자원봉사 인력 지원, 대외협력 기금을 이용한 현금 지원도 할 방침이다.

서울시는 2008년 중국 쓰촨성 지진 피해 때 대외협력 기금 30만달러와 아리수 10만병을, 미얀마 태풍 나르기스 피해 때 대외협력 기금 10만달러를 지원했다.

서울시는 이와함께 초고층빌딩과 공동주택, 학교, 병원 등 각 분야의 위험 요인을 찾아내 내진보강을 하고 도시철도, 상수도, 도로, 각종 시설물 등이 지진에 견딜수 있도록 보강조치 할 계획이다. (연합뉴스)
