Three Irish thieves who snatched a rare Stradivarius violin worth 1.2 million pounds ($1.95m) from a world-famous violinist and tried to sell it on for just 100 pounds ($163).
John Maughan, 40, and two teenage brothers thought they had a laptop when they stole the black rectangular case as owner Min-Jin Kym stopped to grab a bite in London’s Euston station.
A day later, Maughan and two teenagers, who cannot be named for legal reasons, went to an internet café to find the value of Stradivarius. When a man next to them noticed, the trio offered it to him for 100 pounds. But the man turned them down because he claimed that his daughter already had a recorder, reported British tabloid The Sun on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Maughan who was arrested with the boy aged 14 and 16 admitted stealing the violin. Maughan has more than 40 identities and 59 convictions for theft.
The violin which still has not been found was stolen with two bows, one worth 62,000 pounds ($101,180).
