Animal rescuers in California said a kitten stowed away in a shipping container and made a 6,500 mile freighter trip from China.

Marcia Mayeda, director of the Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care & Control, said the kitten survived the trip without any food or water and was taken to the Carson Animal Center after the crate she was in was delivered Thursday to a Compton business, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

Workers at the Carson Animal Center said they have dubbed the 3-month-old kitten Ni Hao, which is Mandarin for "Hello."

"She's doing OK; she was pretty weak and dehydrated," Mayeda said. "It was touch and go at first, but staff has been taking good care of her." (UPI)

새끼 고양이, 혼자 배타고 태평양 건너

중국에서 갓 태어난 고양이 새끼가 화물 수송용 컨테이너에 실려 태평양 너머 미국까지 ‘운송’되어 화제가 되고 있다.

로스앤젤레스 카운티 동물 보호 및 통제 부서가 밝힌 바에 따르면, 이 아기고양이는 12일(현지시간) 배편으로 입항된 상자 중 하나에서 발견되었다고 한다.

생후 3개월 된 이 고양이는 1만 킬로미터가 넘는 바다 여행 도중 물도 음식도 먹지 못했으며 발견 당시 매우 위험한 상태였다고 한다. 그러나 동물 보호 부서의 직원들의 극진한 간호로 현재 건강을 되찾은 상태다.

직원들은 고양이에게 중국어로 인사말을 뜻하는 ‘니하오’라는 이름을 지어줬다고 전했다.
