Cleveland outfielder Choo gets raise, avoids arbitration

Cleveland Indians outfielder Choo Shin-soo has agreed to a one-year deal with the team, getting a US$1 million raise while avoiding salary arbitration.

The Indians' Web site announced early Wednesday, Korean time, that Choo will make $4.9 million in 2012. Last year, he earned

$3.975 million while struggling through a trying season on and off the field. The year before that, he made $461,000, barely over the major league minimum.

The left-handed right fielder was limited last year to 85 games, his fewest since becoming a full-time major leaguer in 2008, by injuries. He managed just eight home runs, 36 runs batted in (RBI) and a .259 batting average -- all his worst numbers since 2008.

In 2010, he hit 22 home runs with 90 RBIs -- both career-highs-- and also stole 22 bases while hitting .300. It was his second consecutive season of at least 20 home runs, 20 steals and a .300 batting average, making him the first Indians player with such a streak.

In May last year, his slow start to the season took a turn for the worse when Choo was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. A month later, he broke his left thumb when he was hit by a pitch from San Francisco's Jonathan Sanchez.

The young Indians still see the 29-year-old as a major building block and hope he can return to his previous form.

The Indians' payroll in 2011 amounted to $49.2 million, 26th among 30 major league clubs.

By agreeing to the one-year deal, Choo avoided salary arbitration for the second straight year. The Indians last went to an arbitration hearing in 1991.

Last year, the Indians sought to lock down Choo with a long-term deal without risking losing him to free agency after 2013. Scott Boras, the uber sports agent representing the Korean, wanted a series of one-year deals until free agency, assuming Choo would drive up his stock over the ensuing seasons and command a lucrative free agent contract later.

추신수, 56억 재계약 합의.. 몸값 상승세 이어져

클리블랜드와 올 연봉 490만 달러에 재계약

미국 프로야구 메이저 무대에서 현역 선수로 활 약하는 유일한 한국인인 추신수(30)가 사실상의 대박을 터뜨렸다.

추신수는 소속 구단인 클리블랜드 인디언스와 조정 절차를 거치지 않고 올해 연봉으로 490만 달러(약 56억원)를 받기로 18일 합의했다.

올해 연봉은 지난해 연봉 397만5천 달러(당시 약 44억원)에서 92만5천 달러 인상된 것으로, 애초 올 연봉으로 예상됐던 430만 달러(약 49억원)를 크게 웃도는 것이다.

연봉 조정을 신청했던 추신수는 내달 2일 예정된 청문회까지 가지 않고 합의안을 도출함으로써 홀가분한 마음으로 운동에 전념할 수 있게 됐다.

추신수는 지난해 박찬호(39•한화), 김병현(33)에 이어 역대 메이저리그에 진출 한 한국 선수 중 세 번째로 연봉 100만 달러를 넘겼다.

1999년 연봉 조정자격을 취득한 박찬호는 전년도 70만 달러에서 3배 이상 뛴 230만 달러에 계약했다. 2002년 76만2천500만 달러를 받은 김병현은 2003년에는 연봉이 325만 달러로 올랐다.

추신수는 2010년 46만1천100달러에서 지난해 397만5천 달러로 9배나 몸값을 불려 몸값 상승률에서 박찬호와 김병현을 제쳤다.

연봉 상승률에 반영된 것처럼 팀의 기대를 한몸에 받았던 추신수는 지난해 음주 운전 파문과 부상 악재가 겹친 영향으로 풀타임 메이저리거가 된 2008년 이래 최악의 시즌을 보냈다.

시즌 성적이 타율 0.259, 홈런 8개, 36타점으로 초라해 올해 연봉이 상승한다 해도 소폭일 것으로 예상됐었다.

하지만 클리블랜드는 추신수가 타율 0.300과 20홈런•20도루를 동시에 작성했던 2009~2010년시즌 이상으로 올해도 활약해줄 것으로 기대하면서 연봉을 크게 올려줬다.

추신수의 연봉은 FA(자유계약선수) 자격을 얻어 500만 달러(옵션 400만 달러)에 1년 재계약을 이끌어낸 팀 동료 그래디 사이즈모어의 기본 연봉과 거의 같은 수준이 다.

크리스 안토네티 클리블랜드 단장은 최근 "추신수가 지난해 많은 역경을 겪었다 "며 "그 과정에서 배운 많은 것이 올 시즌에 도움이 될 것으로 믿는다"고 말했다.

추신수가 2013년 시즌이 끝나고 FA 자격을 얻으면 몸값이 폭등할 수 있다는 평가도 올해 연봉 산정에 영향을 미친 것으로 보인다.

실제로 1999년 13승11패를 거둔 박찬호는 2000년 230만 달러에서 100만 달러 이 상 뛴 385만 달러를 받았다. FA를 취득하기 전인 2001년에는 990만 달러까지 몸값을 높였다.

FA 자격을 얻은 뒤에는 텍사스 레인저스와 5년간 공식 연봉 6천500만 달러, 옵션 600만 달러 등 총 7천100만 달러에 계약했다.

추신수의 목표는 포스트시즌에 진출할 수 있는 팀에서 뛰는 것이고, 그런 팀일 수록 부자구단일 공산이 크다.

박찬호 등 이전의 사례를 고려할 때 추신수가 예전의 페이스를 되찾는다면 FA로 풀리는 내년 말부터 몸값이 한층 치솟을 것으로 프로야구 전문가들은 전망하고 있다.
