3 bodies found in Mexico mass graves identified

The number of bodies found in mass graves in northern Mexico over the month has risen to 293.

MEXICO CITY (AP) _ Mexican forensic investigators said Sunday they have identified three of the 183 bodies found in mass graves in Tamaulipas and returned their remains to family members.

The federal prosecutors office said two men were from the central Mexican state of Tlaxcala and another was from Guanajuato.

Their bodies were among the 120 cadavers transported to Mexico City after mass graves holding 183 bodies were unearthed in San Fernando, Tamaulipas, over the past month.

Forensic investigators have been taking DNA samples from people who believe their missing family members may be among the dead, part of a federal investigation that began April 2. It takes three to four weeks to produce results from DNA tests, according to the prosecutors office.

Many victims are believed to have been migrants headed to the United States who fell prey to the Zetas drug gang. The northeastern state of Tamaulipas borders Texas.

In Durango, soldiers on Saturday found nine plastic bags and a bin stuffed with scorched bones.

And at least 11 people were killed in separate incidents over the weekend in the port city of Acapulco, a popular tourist destination that has in recent months been wracked by drug violence. Those killed included a 17-year-old boy, two women aged 52 and 25 and a man whose body was cut into 13 pieces.

멕시코에서 살해된 뒤 암매장된 것으로 보이는 시신들이 한달째 무더기로 발굴되면서 당국의 긴장감도 더해 가고 있다.

붙잡은 용의자들의 진술을 토대로 의심스런 곳을 파면 팔 수록 신원불명의 피랍자 시신들이 끊임없이 발견되고 있기 때문이다.

4일 외신보도에 따르면 멕시코 북부 타마울리파스주(州)와 중부 두랑고주(州)에서는 지난달 7일부터 피랍자 시신들이 쏟아져 나오면서 두 주에서 한달동안 발견된 시신은 이날까지 모두 293구에 달한다.

멕시코에서 변사체가 발견되는 경우는 흔하지만 한 도시에서 많게는 50여구씩 발견되고, 발굴 작업을 하면 할 수록 시신들이 끊임없이 나오고 있다는 점에서 정부가 2006년 12월 마약갱단과 전면전을 선포한 뒤로 발생한 최악의 사건으로 기억되고 있다.

이날도 두랑고주에서는 6구의 시신이 추가로 발견됐으며 당국은 주말동안에도 수색작업을 계속 진행한다는 입장이다.

지금까지 시신 183구가 나온 타마울리파스주 산 페르난도의 경우 피해자 대부분이 지난달 장거리 버스투어를 하다 납치된 승객들로 사건 배후로는 멕시코 최대 갱단인 '로스 세타스'가 지목되고 있다.

당국은 갱단이 승객들을 납치해 조직원 복무를 강요하다 거부당하자 집단 살해한 뒤 유기했을 가능성에 주목하고 있다.

당국은 사건과 관련해 로스 세타스 단원과 현지 경찰 등 70여명을 체포했으며, 이들의 진술을 토대로 피랍자 시신발굴을 추진하고 있다.

또 현지 경찰관들이 최악의 사건에 대거 연루된 만큼 9천명에 달하는 주 경찰관들에 대한 감찰을 벌여 문제가 드러나는 경관을 즉각 해고하기로 했다.

두랑고주의 경우 사건 경위가 명확하게 밝혀진 것은 없지만 주에서 마약밀매 주도권을 잡고 있는 '시날로아' 갱단이 사건의 배후로 의심받고 있다.

두랑고주는 2002년 탈옥해 자취를 감춘 이 갱단의 두목 '엘 차포'가 숨어있는 곳으로 추정되는 지역으로 현지 경찰이 그의 행방을 알고도 돈에 매수되거나 보복이 두려워 발을 빼고 있다는 설이 나돌고 있다.

사건 수사는 주 단위를 넘어 연방정부로 넘어간 상태로 현장에 파견된 연방경찰관들은 열악한 근무환경에 상당한 피로감을 호소하는 것으로 전해지고 있다.

최근 현지 언론인 '레포르마'는 현장에 파견된 연방경찰들이 제대로 잠 잘 곳마저 없는 상황이라며 건물 바닥에 종이를 깔고 새우잠을 자는 경찰관 모습을 사진과 함께 주요 기사로 다룬 바 있다.
