Woman sentenced 10 years in prison for locking elderly man in basement

A mother of two in the state of Georgia was sentenced to 10 years in prison and an additional 10 years of probation for locking up and abusing a senior citizen in her basement, local reports said.

Chandra Renee Faust, 44, pleaded guilty to a number of charges including wrongful imprisonment and abuse of an elderly man.

The case was revealed after an elderly and disabled man named Johnny Hill escaped from her basement in March 2010.

“I had no room at all. It was just a section of her basement,” Hill was quoted as saying by a local broadcaster.

The woman lured him while he was recovering from surgery at a homeless shelter in downtown Atlanta, offering a room for rent and services as a caretaker, reports say.

Hill told local media that he was locked up by Faust and had to share the basement with another client. They were fed poorly, had to sleep on dirty cots and even used a bucket as a bathroom.

Faust withdrew money that Hill received as disability as she had become his legal guardian, he said.

Hill eventually escaped by breaking free and went to police officers for help.

Unfortunately, Hill’s roommate died just a day before the trial on the case had begun, according to reports.

(애틀랜타=연합뉴스) 김재현 특파원 = 미국의 공포영화 `미저리(Misery)’를 떠 올리게 하는 애틀랜타 중년 과부의 장애인 감금사건이 피의자가 유죄를 시인하고 중 형을 받는 것으로 막을 내렸다.

미국 조지아주 디캡카운티 법원은 19일 불법감금과 주민등록 위조, 장애인 약취 및 학대, 절도 혐의로 기소된 두 자녀의 엄마인 챈드라 포스트(44)에게 징역 10년과 보호관찰 10년을 선고했다.

포스트는 유죄를 인정하느냐는 검사와 판사의 질문에 들릴까 말까한 소리로 “네 ”라고 짧게 답한 후 법정 구속됐다.

감옥으로 끌려가는 엄마를 가까이서 바라보던 18세 딸은 고개를 숙인 채 말없이 눈물만 흘렸다.

4살 난 아들까지 둔 포스트가 범행에 착수한 것은 지난 2009년 여름이었다. 애 틀랜타의 노숙자 보호소에서 장애인 연금으로 근근이 살아가던 자니 레이라는 남성 에게 접근, 방 2개가 있는 지하실에 세들어 살라고 감언이설로 설득해 결국 자신의 집으로 유인하는데 성공했다.

이 남성은 얼마 지나지 않아 방에 물이 새자 다른 방으로 옮겨졌다. 그 방에는 벤 휠러라는 다른 남자 장애인이 있었고 포스트는 두 사람이 방에서 나오지 못하게 방문에 자물쇠를 채우고 못질을 했다.

2009년 9월부터 시작된 두 남자의 지하실 생활은 말로 표현하기도 힘든 비참함 그 자체였다. 이들에게 제공된 것은 더러운 아기용 침대와 세수 대야, 변기용 페인 트통, 그리고 삶의 유일한 낙인 텔레비전 한 대였다.

포스트는 심지어 이들에게 페인트통에 억지로 용변을 보고 비우도록 강요까지 했다.

포스트는 두 사람을 학대하면서 이들의 통장에 들어오는 장애인 연금을 가로채 생활비에 보태썼다.

그해 어두컴컴한 지하실에서 잔인한 겨울을 보낸 두 사람은 2010년 3월 포스트 가 값비싼 캐딜락 승용차를 타고 외출한 사이 자물쇠를 풀고 탈출에 성공했다.

하지만 안타깝게도 휠러씨는 이날 선고가 있기 전에 사망해 법의 심판을 지켜보지 했다.

로버트 제임스 검사는 “이런 사건은 처음 본다”며 “더구나 아기를 둔 엄마가 한 짓이라고는 믿기지 않는다”고 말했다.
