Samsung Electronics’ new virtual-reality device sold out on the day of its debut in the United States, industry sources said Wednesday, in a positive sign for the company’s move to diversify its portfolio amid an ailing handset business.

“It sold out as thousands rushed to order the device right after starting official sales,” a Samsung official said. “The product is now again available for purchase in all regions in the U.S.”

Dubbed Samsung Gear VR, the device was first showcased in August. It provides a 360 degree rotating view, creating a lifelike experience for users. It is currently linked to the Galaxy Note 4 through a micro USB connection.

The product is powered by Oculus VR, a virtual reality firm that was purchased by Facebook Inc. earlier this year. The price tag in the U.S. is $199.99.

Samsung Electronics has been making efforts to tap other businesses as its mainstay smartphone division has been challenged by the market’s saturation and the rise of Chinese players rolling out low-end models with higher price competitiveness. (Yonhap)
