Na’s spokesman quits after appearing on TV drunk

A spokesman for the ruling Grand National Party’s Seoul mayoral candidate Na Kyung-won resigned over the weekend after being accused of appearing on a live TV debate show while drunk.

“I offered to resign because I didn’t want to be a burden to Na,” Shin Ji-ho, a GNP lawmaker and chief press official on Na’s campaign team, told Yonhap News Agency.

The party’s chief campaigner, Rep. Kwon Young-jin, said Shin’s offer of resignation was accepted.

Shin came under fire after appearing on broadcaster MBC’s “100-Minute Debate” program as one of the two Na supporters against two others from opposition candidate Park Won-soon’s camp.

During the program, which was aired live past midnight Thursday, Shin often missed the topics.

Shin later admitted that he had drunk more than eight glasses of boilermakers with reporters about three hours before appearing on the TV show.

A newspaper claimed that Shin, during the dinner and booze session, insisted on drinking boilermakers, saying he speaks better when drunk.

“We apologize for causing public concerns. Candidate Na and the entire camp staff pledge to act more responsibly from now on,” Rep. Kwon said.

한나라당 나경원 서울시장 후보 선거대책위원회 의 대변인인 신지호 의원이 8일 오후 `음주방송' 논란에 대한 책임을 지고 대변인직 에서 물러났다.

신 의원은 나 후보에게 사의를 표명했고, 당 선대위는 이를 수용했다.

신 의원은 연합뉴스와의 통화에서 "나 후보에게 부담이 될 것 같아 사의를 표명 했다"고 말했다.

선대위 상황본부장인 권영진 의원은 "신 의원이 최근 논란에 대해 유감의 뜻을 표하고 선대위 대변인직에서 물러나 선거를 돕겠다는 뜻을 밝혀왔다"며 "이에 선대 위는 당과 협의해 이를 수용하기로 했다"고 밝혔다.

권 의원은 "본의 아니게 시민 여러분께 걱정을 끼쳐 죄송하다"며 "나 후보와 선 대본부는 더욱 신중하게 선거에 임하도록 하겠다"고 말했다.

신 의원은 지난 6일 저녁식사 자리에서 술을 마신 뒤 3시간여 후인 7일 새벽 `D -20일, 서울의 선택은'이라는 주제로 생중계된 MBC `100분 토론'에 출연해 `음주방 송' 논란을 빚었다.

신 의원의 사퇴로 앞으로 선대위는 안형환, 이두아 의원의 양 대변인 체제로 운 영될 것으로 보인다.
