최근 영화관에는 90년대 영화들의 재개봉 열풍이 불고 있다.

첫 개봉 때부터 형성된 꽤나 두터운 마니아층과 개봉 당시 영화를 놓쳤던 신규관객들이 잇달아 영화관을 찾으면서 10년 이상이 지났음에도 불구하고 좋은 성적을 거두고 있다.

2월 14일의 발렌타인 데이를 맞이해 이와이 슌지 감독의 1999년작 감성로맨스 영화 “러브레터”가 재개봉 했다. 특별한 날을 축하하고 싶은 커플이나 히로코의 “오겡끼데스까”를 다시 한번 듣고 싶어하는 관객들이 이 날, 잊지 않고 영화관을 찾았다. 53개의 상영관에서만 상영했음에도 불구하고 3만5천명의 관객몰이를 하며 성공적인 결과를 낳았다.

18년 만에 관객과 재회한 뤽 베송의 1994년작 영화 “레옹” 역시 개봉한 지 약 일주일 만에 2만여 명의 누적관객수를 동원하여 박스오피스 7위를 차지했다. 레옹의 둥근 안경과 덮어쓴 모자, 그리고 마틸다의 단발머리와 초커 목걸이 등 그 때 그 시절을 상기시키는 여러 신드롬을 다시 한번 경험하고 싶은 골수 관객과 나이 제한으로 볼 수 없었던 신규 관객들이 이뤄낸 성과가 아닌가 싶다.

특히나 디지털 리마스터링을 통해 개선된 화질로 돌아온 “레옹”은 1995년 개봉 당시 국내 규정에 의해 삭제되었던 23분의 미공개 컷이 추가되어 더 큰 관심을 받고 있다.

앞으로도 우리는 영화관에서 적지 않은 재개봉작들을 만날 수 있을 것 같다. “러브레터”를 잇는 이와이 슌지의 또 다른 감성 로맨스 “4월 이야기”가 25일 재개봉에 들어갔으며 1997년 개봉작인 “노킹 온 헤븐스 도어”는 5월에, 픽사 애니메이션인 “니모를 찾아서”는 3D버전으로 6월에 관객들과의 재회를 준비하고 있다. (진은수 인턴기자/코리아헤럴드)

Reopening movies bring touch of nostalgia

Movies that stole the box office more than 10 years ago are tugging on the nostalgia of Korean moviegoers by reopening at local theaters. Despite its long hiatus, they are showing strong ticket power.

Even if you haven’t seen Shunji Iwai’s movie “Love Letter,” you may still recognize the famous line “Oggenkideska,” meaning “How are you?” The movie reopened on Feb. 14 to celebrate Valentine’s Day following the “first love” fever sparked by the Korean movie “Architecture 101.”

Despite its small-scale opening in only 53 theaters, it attracted more than 35,000 viewers, ranking 10th place at the box office.

Another reopened movie “Leon” by Ruc Besson first premiered in 1994. It is also faring successfully in the box office at seventh place as of April 17, selling more than 20,000 tickets. The tragic bond between a professional killer and a 12-year-old girl had generated new trends including fashion items such as Leon’s round-eye glasses and Matilda’s decadent-looking choker. The song “The Shape of My Heart” by Sting from the movie’s soundtrack was also well received.

Old and new fans are flocking to the theaters to watch the remastered version of “Leon,” including 23 extra minutes that had been cut out of its first run.

Following the success of “Love Letter” and “Leon,” more popular movies of the past are coming back. Another Iwai romance film “April Story” will be re-released on April 25. And “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” will be reopening after 15 years in May, followed by the re-release of Disney and Pixar’s animation “Finding Nemo” in 3-D in June.
