KLANG, Selangor: Founded over a hundred year ago, Pulau Ketam seems to have a stroke of bad luck as it witnessed some really bad incidents over the past couple of years, including the sinking of a century-old pontoon, the "dog eats dog" incident and the "cousin kills cousin" family tragedy, among others, casting over the otherwise serene island a shroud of gloom.

When islanders were about to usher in the year 2011, a fisherman accidentally caught a giant "Devil Ray" weighing more than 1300kg and measuring 11 feet long and 18 feet wide on New Year's Eve, causing widespread panic among local residents who thought it could mean a bad omen for the coming year.

Superstitious

That said, majority of Pulau Ketam residents took the incident with open minds despite the fact that some islanders would see the "Devil Ray" as a bad omen. They stressed that it was a mere coincidence and the future of the island remained unpredictable. They also advised other islanders not to get excessively superstitious.

The incident took place in the waters off the coast of Pulau Ketam, where a fisherman accidentally caught a rarely seen giant "Devil Ray" when casting the fishing net into the open sea hoping to catch some catfishes at around 7 pm on 31st December. As the "Devil Ray" was entangled by the net, the fisherman intended to untie the rope and release it on the following day. To his shock, the "Devil Ray" died early the next morning.

Subsequently, the fisherman hauled the "Devil Ray" back to Pulau Ketam.

According to local residents, this was the biggest "Devil Ray" ever caught, with a width in excess of three adult men.

This kind of "Devil Ray" is also known as "Manta Ray" and is quite rare along the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It was considered very unusual for anyone to catch the fish.

Since the fish was caught on New Year's Eve, the islanders were worried it could be a bad omen.

After the "Devil Ray" died, the fisherman buried it on a beach opposite Pulau Ketam on the advice of local residents.

Issue of wild dogs

Over the past two years, a number of unexpected tragic incidents occurred in Pulau Ketam, such as the sinking of a century-old pontoon, the "dog eats dog" incident and the "cousin kills cousin" family tragedy, the presence of prostitutes from China, the closure of South Port pier, water sanction, suicide of a woman at Simpang Lima, and unfavourable new government policies against fishermen, etc.

In addition, Pulau Ketam has also been reduced to a "transit point for illegal migrants," and its reputation received a further blow with the revelation of rampant corruption among Immigration officials supposed to check illegal migrants there.

The islanders are also concerned about the tacky issue of wild dogs that would potentially endanger the safety of local children and have negative impact on the hygiene and tourist industry of Pulau Ketam.

말레이시아 중국 화교 신문 마이 신츄(My Sinchew)는, 이번 달 1일에 포획된 길이 3.35m, 넒이 5.5m에 이르는 ‘악마 가오리(Devil Ray)’는 거대 생물의 출현 자체가 다가오는 해에 큰 재앙이 될지도 모른다고 판단한 현지 플라우 케탐 섬 주민들 사이에 큰 혼란을 일으키고 있다고 전했다.

하지만, 상당수 현지 주민들은 이번 재앙에 아랑곳 하지 않고 사건 자체를 받아들이는 모습이다. 이들은 악마가오리의 출현은 단지 우연의 결과일 뿐이며, 어느 누구도 섬의 미래를 예측하지는 못한다고 밝혔다.

작년 12월 31일 플라우 케탐섬 해역에서 잡힌 악마가오리는 한 어부에 의해 포획되었으나, 그 다음날 해역으로 방출되었다. 하지만 방출되던 날 아침 이미 죽은 상태로 발견되었다.

성인 세 명의 몸 넓이를 자랑하는 ‘쥐가오리(Manta Ray)’라고도 불리는 악마 가오리는 말레이시아 서해안 지역에서는 보기 드문 희귀 종이며, 이번 포획도 보기 드문 일이라고 한다.

대형 가오리를 낚은 어부는 현지 주민들의 요청에 따라 죽은 가오리의 시체를 플라우 케탐 섬 반대편 해변에 매장하였다. 하지만 지난 2년 동안 플라우 케탐섬에는 예상치 못한 수많은 재앙이 들이닥쳐 주민들을 불안에 떨게 만들었다. 이 기간 동안에만 100년 전에 지어진 해상 부교의 침수 사건, 강아지가 다른 강아지를 먹는 모습, 친척이 자신의 친척을 살해하는 기괴한 사건, 중국에서 건너온 매춘부들의 모습, 한 여성의 자살 사건, 어부들의 등을 돌린 정부의 아니한 정책 등 섬 주민들은 새해 전 날 발생한 악마 가오리 포획 사건의 이후 불안의 소용돌이 속에서 하루하루를 지내고 있다.
