Korea’s coal consumption rose 11 percent over the five years from 2010 to 2015, in contrast to the U.S. and U.K., which have reduced use of the fuel by nearly 25 percent, a recent study shows.

China saw a 10.2 percent increase in the cited period, while India logged a 39 percent jump, according to the BP Statistical Review of World Energy.

In 2010, Korea consumed 75.9 million tons of coal, which peaked at 84.6 million in 2014, falling slightly to 84.5 million in 2015. That accounted for 2.2 percent of global consumption.

China remained the two largest consumer of the fuel in 2015, while India, with its economy growing at the fastest pace in the world, overtook the U.S. as the second largest consumer. India’s share of the global coal use was 10.6 percent last year, compared to America’s 10.3 percent.

Overall, coal’s share of global primary energy consumption fell to 29.2 percent in 2015, the lowest share since 2005.
