삼성, 스마트시계 이름은 “기어,” 그 기능은?

2일 삼성전자에 따르면 그 동안 베일에 가려져 있었던 삼성의 스마트시계의 이름은 “기어(Gear)” 라고 밝혀졌다

마치 시계의 톱니 바퀴 부품들을 연상시키는 의미를 가진 “기어”라는 단어를 차용한 것으로 해석된다.

코리아헤럴드 취재 결과, 삼성전자는 한국에서 6월 21일 상표 특허 출원을 했고, 미국에서는 약 일 주일 뒤인 6월 27일에 특허 출원을 한 것으로 밝혀졌다.

한국에서의 특허 출원 번호는 “40-2013-0041142” 이며 미국에서의 특허 출원 번호는 “85971385”이다.

통상적으로 특허 시장에서 특허출원을 하고 상표 등록을 끝마치면 상표명을 바꾸지 않기 때문에 이변이 없는 한 삼성의 스마트시계의 상품 명은 “기어”가 될 가능성이 높다는 것이 특허 계의 설명이다.

특허 등록 기간은 출원 후 약 6~8 개월, 길게는 10개월이 소요 된다. 특허 공고가 나고 한 달의 이의 신청을 거친 후 최종 등록이 되는 것이다. 내년 6월 정도 최종 등록이 될 것이라는 전망이 나오고 있다

한국의 특허 출원 정보는 제품 브랜드가 특정 분야에서 특허권을 소유할 수 있는 “지정상품”이라는 항목이 있다. 예를 들어 디지털 카메라 부분에 지정상품 등록을 하면 디지털 카메라 군에서는 유사 상표를 쓸 수 없게 되는 것이다.

삼성 기어의 경우 디지털 카메라, 선글라스, 스마트 폰, 안경, 위성 위치 확인 시스템 장치(GPS), 음향 및 영상의 기록/전송/재생용 장치 부분 등에 지정 상품 등록을 마친 상태이다.

또한 텔레비전 수신기, 스마트 폰 및 컴퓨터 단말기와 무선통신이 가능한 시계, 건강상태기록을 위한 다기능 건강 장치용 소프트웨어 인터페이스라는 설명이 덧붙여 있어, 일반 스마트 폰의 기능에 건강체크 기능을 보유한 다기능 시계가 될 것으로 예상 되고 있다.

특이할 만한 점은 삼성기어의 지정상품 부분 중 “선글라스” 부분인데, 이는 시계를 이용해 영상을 볼 때 작은 스크린의 단점을 보안하기 위해 삼성이 특별히 개발한 안경을 사용할 수도 있다는 전망이 나오고 있다.

또한 미국의 특허 출원을 살펴 보면 “3D 안경 (3D glasses)”라는 설명이 있어 3D기능을 갖춘 안경을 함께 출시 하지 않겠냐는 평도 나오고 있다.

또한 USB 메모리 형태로 다른 컴퓨터 기기와 연결도 가능 할 것으로 예상되고 있다.

Amid expectation on the rise for Samsung Electronics’ smart watch, the world’s largest electronics firm filed a patent on its smart watch a month ago in Korea and the United States, The Korea Herald has confirmed.

The world’s largest electronics firm applied for the patent on the wearable gadget it calls “Samsung Gear” on June 21 at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, and filed at the United States Patent and Trademark Office on June 27.

It is said the name for the watch will be the official one as it is rare for the name of a product to change from that in the patent registration.

In Korea the registration process usually takes four to six months, sometimes up to eight moths.

When asked why there was difference in timing for the applications, a Samsung official declined to comment citing concerns over the leak of information to other competitors.

According to summarized product descriptions in the patent applications with the serial numbers “40-2013-0041142” and “85971385” in Korea and the U.S., respectively, the smart watch will likely feature functions such as a digital camera, health device to record health conditions, global positioning system device, television receiver, and data communication to personal digital assistants, smartphones and personal computers through websites and other computer and electronic communication networks.

Also appearing in the filing are “sunglasses” and “3-D glasses,” which imply that Samsung will possibly introduce glasses down the road through which users watch video clips instead of on a small screen of the watch, a major disadvantage that has long been pointed out.

It is expected that the Samsung’s new product will be introduced for the first time at IFA 2013 in Berlin, an international consumer electronics and home appliances show scheduled to be held Oct. 7-10.

Samsung’s rival Apple is also said to release its own smart watch reportedly called “iWatch” at the event.

Other competitors in the electronics market have already released similar products such as Sony’s “Smart Watch 2.”

Qualcomm, a U.S.-based semiconductor maker, also filed a patent for a smart watch under the name of TOQ at the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
