최근 LTE-A 상용화로 인해 세계 최대 스마트폰 판매량을 자랑하는 삼성전자와 애플의 모바일 경쟁이 본격적으로 패블릿 시장으로 확산될 것이라는 업계의 의견이 나오고 있다.

지난달 26일 SK 텔레콤이 세계 최초로 LTE-A 서비스를 상용화하면서 삼성전자는 같은 날 갤럭시 S4 LTE-A 버전을 출시했고 LG전자 및 애플도 LTE-A를 지원하는 신모델을 곧 출시할 예정이라고 업계 관계자들은 밝혔다.

그러나 지금까지 이어져온 삼성과 애플의 스마트폰 및 태블릿 PC 경쟁과는 달리 큰 화면을 탑재한 패블릿을 먼저 시장에 선보인 삼성이 현재로서는 경쟁에서 우세하다는 것이 업계의 의견이다.

2011년 삼성전자가 5.3인치 갤럭시 노트를 처음 내놓으면서 패블릿 판매에 주력했지만 세계 모바일 시장에서는 많은 성과를 거두지 못했다.

문제는 데이터 속도에 있었다.

한 업계 전문가에 따르면 3년 전만 해도 네트워크 속도가 지금에 비해 많이 느렸던 이유 때문에 사용자들도 스마트폰을 통해 지금과 같이 많은 것을 할 수 없었을 뿐만 아니라 업체들도 기기의 크기에 다양성을 줄 필요성을 못 느꼈다.

그러나 그는 “앞으로 LTE-A 및 수년 내로 등장할 5G 네트워크가 속도의 문제를 해결해 줌으로써 그 장점을 최대한 활용한 혁신적인 애플리케이션과 함께 모바일 기기의 크기에 있어서도 다양화가 올 것”이라고 전했다.

삼성은 지난 1일 런던에서 6.3 인치 화면을 탑재한 갤럭시 메가를 출시했고 올 9월 베를린에서 열릴 IFA 2013 에서 5.7 인치 화면을 탑재한 갤럭시 노트3을 선보일 예정이다.

애플도 올 하반기에 LTE-A를 지원하고 최신 iOS7을 탑재한 아이폰 5S를 내놓을 것이라고 업계 관계자는 밝혔다.

조만간 출시될 아이폰 5S는 기존 아이폰 5 모델과 동일한 4인치 화면을 탑재할 것으로 보이나 업계 전문가에 따르면 애플도 스마트폰 규격의 다양화를 위해 앞으로 5인치 이상의 화면 크기를 고려하지 않을 수 없을 것이다.

LG 또한 5.5인치의 옵티머스 G2 LTE-A를 올 8월 내놓을 것으로 보여 하반기 패블릿 시장경쟁에 가속도를 붙일 것으로 보인다.

Faster network draws ‘phablet war’

As the world’s top two smartphone makers Samsung Electronics and Apple Inc. continue to vie for a larger share of pie in the global mobile device market, the next battle is expected to focus on “phablets,” according to industry officials.

With the commercialization of the LTE-Advanced network -- which can provide up to double the connection speed of the existing Long Term Evolution technology -- the two electronics giants are expected to release their latest handheld devices that are built for the faster network in the coming months.

However, unlike the previous times in which the competition had been initiated by Apple first releasing the iPhone and iPad, Samsung’s first-move advantage in the global phablet market has already changed the game, experts said.

On July 1, Samsung released the Galaxy Mega with a 6.3-inch display, first targeting the company’s European stronghold: the U.K.

Many in the industry consider this to be Samsung’s strategic move to test the global marketability of larger phablets.

The world’s No. 1 smartphone maker is also expected to reveal the 5.7-inch Galaxy Note 3 in September at the IFA 2013 event in Germany, according to industry officials.

Both the Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy Mega have adopted larger screen sizes than the previous models and can be operated with Samsung’s signature stylus pen.

“The revolutionizing LTE-A technology, which allows the users to search and download at up to 150 Mbps right in the palm of their hands, is expected to encourage more companies to explore a variety of ways to commercialize larger handheld devices from now on,” an industry official said.

In fact, when Samsung launched the first version of Galaxy Note equipped with a 5.3-inch screen in 2011, skepticism was high and expectation low about whether the bigger-than-palm sized smartphone could attract global customers.

“Slower mobile connection speeds back then not only prevented the smartphone users from doing more on their devices but also held back the handheld makers from diversifying their products with different sizes,” the official said.

“The concept of phablet can now be truly realized with the introduction of the LTE-A network and the apparent eagerness of handheld makers to answer the growing global demand for larger and more innovative mobile devices.”

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 5S within the next few months and the iPhone 6 in early 2014, according to various sources.

Equipped with the latest iOS7, the new iPhone 5S will reportedly feature the same 4-inch screen size as the current iPhone 5 model.

However, Apple may consider incorporating larger screen sizes for the iPhone 6 and future models, experts suggested.

“Due to the increasingly personalized needs of smartphone users, size and functional diversification is necessary for the handheld makers,” the official added.

As the world’s first LTE-A network was launched in Korea in late June, Apple is reportedly in negotiations with Korean mobile carriers to make its new iPhones LTE-A compatible.

Meanwhile, LG Electronics is expected in August to reveal the LTE-A-compatible Optimus G2 equipped with a 5.5-inch screen, full high-definition display and improved camera technologies.
