It’s been a long and eventful ride, spanning 19 years and three countries, but South Korean baseball player Park Chan-ho is finally hanging up his glove.

“Park Chan-ho notified the team this afternoon that he is retiring,” an official from Park’s team Hanwha Eagles said Thursday. The team said it would respect Park’s decision.

The official added that Park would hold a press conference at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Seoul at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The pitcher joined professional baseball in 1994, playing 17 years in the U.S.’ Major League Baseball, and one year each in Japan and South Korea.

The 39-year-old pitcher, dubbed “Korean Express” by South Korean media, became the first-ever Korean to make it to the MLB in 1994. He was recruited by the Los Angeles Dodgers while he was attending Hanyang University.

Despite initial difficulties in the early part of his career, Park eventually became a force in the big league: recording double-digit wins for five straight seasons from 1997 to 2001.

His heyday was in the early 2000s, when he collected a career-high 18 wins in 2000 and became an all-star the next season.

But his illustrious career began to spiral the next season, after he signed a $65 million, five-year deal with the Texas Rangers. A series of injuries benched the pitcher and he never lived up to the high expectations accompanied by his lucrative contract.

In the middle of the 2005 season, Park was traded to the San Diego Padres, where he had a relatively successful run as a role player. San Diego, however, did not continue the contract with him after 2006, and Park became a journeyman, spending each of the four subsequent seasons with a different team.

He enjoyed his final blaze of glory in 2010 by becoming the winningest Asian Major Leaguer ever, surpassing his former teammate Hideo Nomo of Japan.

Park wrapped up his 17-year MLB career after the 2010 season with a total of 124 wins with a 4.36 ERA, 1.396 WHIP and 1715 strikeouts in 476 games.

In Park’s earlier days in L.A., he was famous for fastballs that reached up to 160 kilometers per hour. But his style of pitching accompanied control problems.

As his career developed, he expanded his repertoire to include the two-seam fastball, cutter and sinker, making a successful transition from a power pitcher to control pitcher.

Matt Vasgersian, a sports announcer for FOX, once commented on Park’s two-seam fastball: “You can only see a two-seamer like that in PlayStation 2.”

박찬호, 불같은 강속구에서 명품 커브까지

29일 전격 은퇴를 선언한 '코리안 특급' 박찬호(39)는 불같은 강속구를 앞세워 미국 메이저리그에 입성해 현란한 변화구를 남기며 19년 프로야구 인생을 마감했다.

박찬호가 약관 스무살에 한국인 최초의 메이저리거가 될 수 있었던 원동력은 최고시속 158㎞에 이르는 불같은 강속구였다.

어린시절부터 미국프로야구의 전설적인 강속구 투수 놀런 라이언을 동경했다는 박찬호는 공주고 시절 하루에 팔굽혀펴기만 몇 백번씩 하며 팔힘을 길렀다.

타고난 어깨에 충실한 근력 운동까지 보태지자 박찬호는 고교야구에서 첫손에 꼽히는 강속구를 던졌다.

하지만 그는 제구력이 기대에 못미쳐 '미완의 대기'라는 꼬리표를 달아야 했다.

그런 박찬호가 국제무대에서 두각을 드러낸 것은 한양대에 재학중이던 1993년 2월 호주 퍼스에서 열린 아시아선수권대회였다.

당시 위재영, 문동환, 임선동, 조성민 등과 대표팀에 발탁된 박찬호는 아시아선 수권대회에서 가장 위력적인 공을 던져 메이저리그 스카우트들의 눈도장을 받았다.

국내 대학 지도자들은 박찬호의 들쭉날쭉한 제구력 때문에 투구폼을 바로잡을 엄 두를 내지 못했지만 1994년 로스앤젤레스 다저스는 빠른 공 하나만을 보고 120만달러의 계약금을 지불하며 메이저리그 유니폼을 입혔다.

그러나 박찬호는 데뷔 첫해 2경기에서 4이닝동안 5실점한 뒤 마이너리그로 추락 했고 이듬해에도 2경기에서 4이닝동안 2실점 한 게 메이저리그 성적의 전부다.

박찬호가 야구인생의 새로운 전기를 맞은 것은 마이너리그에서 투수 코치 버트 후튼을 만나면서였다.

국내 프로야구조차 경험하지 못했던 박찬호는 공만 빨랐지 마운드에서 기교는 백지상태였다.

후튼 코치는 1994년 더블A 샌안토니오와 1995년 트리플A 알버커키에서 2년 동안 박찬호를 상대로 투수의 모든 것을 가르쳤다.

불안정한 제구력을 가다듬기 시작했고 박찬호가 대학시절 던진 슬라이더 대신 낙차 큰 커브를 전수했다.

이 뿐만아니라 타자를 상대하는 요령, 견제동작, 투수로서의 마음자세까지 일깨 워 나갔다.

후튼 코치의 지도로 150㎞를 웃도는 직구의 제구력을 잡고 변화구마저 폭포수처럼 떨어뜨린 박찬호는 진정한 메이저리거로 거듭났다.

1996년 4월7일 시카고 컵스를 상대로 감격의 데뷔 첫 승을 올린 박찬호는 가장 먼저 후튼코치에게 전화해 감사의 인사를 전했다.

풀타임 메이저리거 첫해인 1996년 5승5패를 거둔 박찬호는 1997년부터 2001년까지 5년 연속 두자릿수 승수를 올리며 다저스의 실질적인 에이스로 군림했다.

그러나 2002년 자유계약선수(FA) 자격을 얻어 텍사스 레인저스로 이적한 뒤 허 리 부상이 찾아왔다.

몸이 성치 않다 보니 구속마저 떨어져 힘겨운 나날을 보내야 했다.

FA 계약으로 거금을 만졌으니 그냥 은퇴할 법도 했지만 박찬호는 포기하지 않았다.

삼십대로 접어들면서 커브를 더욱 다듬어 '명품'으로 만들었고 2005년 샌디에이고 파드레스 시절에는 투심패스트볼과 체인지업까지 연마하며 마운드에서 살아남는 방법을 스스로 터득했다.

메이저리그 말년까지 변화구만큼은 정상급으로 평가받았던 박찬호는 지난해 일본야구를 거쳐 올시즌 한국으로 건너와 국내 팬들에게 현란한 추억을 남기고 화려한 야구 인생을 마감했다. (연합뉴스)
