South Korea's global baseball ranking fell one notch to fourth place in 2012 compared to the year before, according to the rating list released Saturday by the International Baseball Federation (IBAF).

The IBAF said the country earned 56.50 ranking points for the whole of this year for a total of 518.20 points. The points are tallied by checking performance of national baseball teams in international games, with more points being given to teams that win the world championships for youths and the World Baseball Classic.

The total gained this year fell way shy of the 123 points earned by Japan. Japan has overtaken South Korea in third place and is the highest ranked country in Asia.

"South Korea's performance in international competitions this year was not good and because of this it earned less ranking points," a local source said.

According to the IBAF, Cuba stood at the top of its list at 766.02 points followed by the United States at 733.25 points.

Japan, South Korea and Taiwan made the top five with Canada coming in sixth and Australia placing last of the 10 countries checked.

한국야구 세계랭킹 4위…한 계단 하락

한국야구의 세계랭킹이 지난해보다 한 계단  떨어져 4위가 됐다.

8일 국제야구연맹(IBAF) 발표에 따르면 한국야구는 올해 랭킹포인트 56.50점을 얻어 총 518.20점으로 세계랭킹 4위를 차지했다.

우리나라의 지난해 세계랭킹은 3위였다.

한국은 올해 123점을 획득한 일본(664.42점)에 세계 3위를 내주고 아시아 1위 자리에서도 밀려났다.

올해 얻은 랭킹포인트만 놓고 보면 한국은 세계 10위에 해당한다.

IBAF 세계랭킹은 최근 4년간 국제대회 성적을 바탕으로 산출한다.

IBAF는 각 대회 우승팀에 50점을 주고 2~4위는 40점, 30점, 15점 순으로 차등 배점한다.

또 권위가 가장 높은 월드베이스볼클래식(WBC)에서 정상에 오르면 우승 점수 50점에 6을 곱해 총 300점을 주는 등 대회마다 가중치도 둔다. 21세 및 18세 이하 세계선수권대회에서는 순위 점수에 2를 곱해준다.

한국은 올해 서울에서 열린 18세 이하 세계청소년선수권대회에서 5위에 그쳤고,대만에서 치른 아시아선수권대회에서는 3위에 머무는 등 성적이 좋지 않았다.

세계랭킹 1위는 아마야구 최강 쿠바(766.02점)가 지켰다. 미국(733.25점)이 2위를 유지했다.

대만은 15세 이하 및 18세 이하 세계청소년선수권대회에서 각각 3위, 아시아선수권대회서 2위에 오르고 WBC 예선에서는 조 1위를 차지하는 등 올해에만 205점을 획득, 총 499.79점으로 작년 7위에서 5위로 뛰어올랐다.
