People at Harvard, MIT read a lot

Cambridge, Massachusetts, home of the world's prestigious universities -- Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) -- topped the list of the most well-read U.S. cities, an online report by CNN said Friday quoting Amazon.com

Amazon compiled its sales data for books, magazines and newspapers -- both in print and for its Kindle e-reader -- from Jan. 1, this year.

The bookseller used population figures to find out which cities bought them the most, per capita, CNN reported.

"The list not only considers where people are heavy readers, but where they opt to buy books online as opposed to at more traditional stores," CNN reported.

The top five were all college towns.

Cambridge was followed by Berkeley, California, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Boulder, Colorado, along with Alexandria, Virginia, a suburb of Washington D.C.

"We hope book lovers across the country enjoy this fun look at where the most voracious readers reside, and that everyone gets the chance to relax with some great summer reads," Mari Malcolm, a managing editor at Amazon, said in a news release.

(샌프란시스코=연합뉴스) 하버드대와 매사추세츠공대(MIT)가 있는 매사추세츠의 캠브리지가 미국에서 가장 책을 많이 읽는 도시로 꼽혔다고 세계 최대 인터넷서점인 아마존닷컴의 자료를 인용해 CNN 인터넷판이 29일 보도했다.

이에 따르면 아마존은 올해 들어 최근까지 종이책과 전자책을 합쳐 서적과 잡지 , 신문류 등의 1인당 매출이 가장 많은 도시를 조사해 이런 결과를 얻었다.

아마존은 캠브리지를 비롯해 대학 도시들이 상위권을 거의 휩쓸었다고 전했다.

3위를 차지한 캘리포니아주 버클리에는 UC버클리가 자리잡고 있으며, 4위와 5위 인 미시간주 앤아버(앤아버 미시간대), 콜라라도주 볼더(CU볼더)도 대학 도시로 불 린다.

2위는 워싱턴DC 외곽에 있는 버지니아주의 알렉산드리아가 차지했다.

캠브리지에서는 논픽션 서적이 가장 많이 팔렸으며, 볼더는 미식가 도시라는 명 성답게 요리책이나 음식, 와인 관련 서적들이 가장 많이 팔린 지역이었다. 알렉산드 리아는 어린이 관련 서적들이 가장 많이 팔린 지역으로 꼽혔다.

CNN은 다만 이번 순위가 전통적인 오프라인 서점이 아닌 인터넷 서점의 매출 순 위이기 때문에 대학도시들이 상위 순위를 차지한 한 요인으로 작용했을 수도 있다고 말했다.
