S. Korea's tourism income grows despite Japan's quake

South Korea's income from tourism increased steadily in March and April, data showed Thursday, indicating that the country might have been insulated from the impact from Japan's devastating earthquake in March.

   Foreign tourists' spending in South Korea reached US$770.1 million in April, up 6.5 percent from a year earlier, according to the Bank of Korea. South Korea's income from tourism rose 28.3 percent on-year to $926.4 million in March, when Japan was hit by the devastating earthquake and its subsequent nuclear crisis.

   In March and April, the number of foreign tourists increased, compared with the previous year, data by the state-run tourism promotion agency showed.

   The number of such inbound travelers reached 754,458 in April, up 3.3 percent from the same period last year. The on-year growth rate accelerated from a 1.5 percent expansion seen in March when the number of such tourists came in at 781,286.

   The central bank said a steady gain in South Korea's income from tourism may indicate that foreign tourists opted for Korea instead of Japan.

   The deficit of the travel account, including spending on overseas travel and study, widened to $761.9 million in April, compared with a shortfall of $564.5 million in March.

日대지진에도 우리나라 관광수입 `굳건'

관광수입·외국인 관광객수 전년보다 오히려 상승

(서울=연합뉴스) 고은지 기자 = 일본 대지진이라는 악재에도 외국인 여행객으로부터 얻은 관광수입이 지난해 같은 기간보다 오히려 늘어난 것으로 나타났다.

동일본에서 대지진이 발생한 3월과 후쿠시마(福島) 제1원자력발전소의 사고 등 지진의 여파가 강했던 4월 우리나라를 찾은 외국인 관광객 수도 전년 같은 기간보다 늘었다.

2일 한국은행에 따르면 지난 3월 외국인 관광객으로 인한 수입을 의미하는 일반여행수입은 9억2천640만달러로 전년 같은 달보다 28.3%가 증가했다.

또 4월에는 1년 전보다 6.5%가 늘어난 7억7천10만달러를 기록했다.

3월과 4월 관광객 수 역시 지난해 같은 기간보다 증가했다.

한국관광공사가 집계한 3월 우리나라를 방문한 외국인 관광객은 78만1천286명으로 지난해 3월 76만9천894명보다 1.5%, 4월에는 75만4천458명으로 1년 전 73만265명보다 3.3%가 늘었다.

대륙별로는 중동 관광객이 지난해 3~4월 두 달간 총 1만4천476명에서 올해 3~4월 총 1만7천450명으로 20.5%가 늘었다.

유럽 관광객은 10만7천998명에서 11만7천836명으로 9.1%, 아시아 관광객은 116만3천257명에서 118만6천286명으로 2.0%, 호주 등 오세아니아 지역에서 온 관광객은 2만7천90명에서 2만7천385명으로 1.1%가 늘었다.

다만 미주와 아프리카에서 온 관광객은 각각 14만734명에서 13만9천897명, 5천566명에서 5천519명으로 소폭 감소했다.

또 다른 아시아 국가와는 달리 일본은 올해 3~4월 우리나라를 찾은 관광객이 48만8천497명으로 지난해 3~4월 54만5천201명보다 10% 넘게 줄었다.

이처럼 인접국인 일본 대지진에도 우리나라를 찾는 외국인 관광객이 늘었다는 것은 외국인들의 여행심리가 일본 대지진의 영향을 별로 받지 않았거나 오히려 일본여행을 계획했던 외국인들이 우리나라로 방향을 선회했기 때문으로 풀이된다.

한은 경제통계국 국제수지팀 노충식 팀장은 "1년 전과 올해 3, 4월 관광수지를 비교해볼 때 일본 대지진의 여파가 미치는 영향은 제한적이었던 것으로 보인다"고 설명했다.

노 팀장은 또 "4월 여행수입이 3월에 비해 많이 줄어들었지만, 통상 이 시기가 비수기인 점을 고려하면 특별한 변화는 아니다"라고 말했다.
