S. Korean maestro says will push for joint orchestra performance with N. Korea

'Musicians from two Koreas may perform Beethoven together’

South Korean conductor Chung Myung-whun said a joint orchestra consisting of musicians from South Korea and North Korea, may hold a concert in Seoul and/or Pyongyang to perform Beethoven Symphony No. 9 “Choral” late this year, as almost nothing but music can seek a common goal.

Chung said he will also run a program to nurture young and talented musicians in the North.

His comments came after Chung, music director of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, returned to Seoul after a four-day trip to North Korea from Monday to Thursday.

“As the SPO annually performs Beethoven Symphony No. 9 in the late year to help those in need, I hope that members of the SPO and North Korean musicians could meet together and perform the symphony together late this year,” Chung told reporters in Seoul, adding that feasibility of a joint concert this year is quite high.

Chung said the South’s SPO and the North’s Chosun Arts Exchange Association, have agreed on a letter of intent to push for a regular performance of a joint orchestra in Seoul and/or Pyongyang and to nurture young North Korean musicians.

“It will be the best if we could perform here one time, and in Pyongyang one more time. Another thing I want is to gather young North Korean musicians and spend some two weeks of time with them next year and practice with them,” he said.

During his visit to Pyongyang, Chung conducted the North’s State Symphony Orchestra once and the Unhasu Orchestra, twice, according to Kim Joo-ho, president of the SPO, who accompanied Chung to Pyongyang.

Chung also saw a performance by the North’s state orchestra at Moranbong Theater and auditioned seven North Korean artists in strings, wind instruments and vocals.

“North Korean musicians’ skills are very advanced and they don’t make any mistakes. But I also told them that that wasn’t enough and asked them to pursue the music on a deeper level,” the 59-year-old said.

Chung said his long-time friend and former French culture minister Jack Lang helped him contact a North Korean official in France to push for the latest meeting with North Korean artists.

There had been many chances for Chung to hold a concert in Pyongyang but none worked out. Chung had to give up his plan to participate in the Isang Yun World Peace Concert in Pyongyang in 2006, due to North Korea’s missile tests.

In July, Philadelphia Orchestra conductor Charles Dutoit was trying to form an inter-Korean youth orchestra through South Korean partner Lindembaum Music Company.

On Aug. 15, Argentine-Israeli conductor Daniel Barenboim led his youth orchestra, consisting of artists from the Middle East including Israelis and Palestinians, to perform at Imjingak near the demilitarized zone to promote peace on the Korean Peninsula.

정명훈 “남북 합동 교향악단 연주 추진”

(서울=연합뉴스) 정명훈 서울시향 예술감독 겸 유니세프 친선대 사는 16일 “(남북 정부의 승인을 전제로) 남북 합동 교향악단의 연주를 정례적으로 추진하기로 북한 조선예술교류협회와 의향서를 체결했다”고 밝혔다.

최근 북한을 방문하고 돌아온 정 감독은 이날 오전 서울시향 연습실에서 기자회 견을 열어 “남북의 젊은 음악가를 서로 만나게 하는 것이 이번 방북의 목적이었다.

이들은 새로운 세상을 만날 사람들인 만큼 서로 일찍 만나는 게 좋다고 생각했다”며 이같이 말했다.

교향악단은 남북한 연주자 동수(同數)로 구성될 예정으로, 그는 “개인적으로는 (남북 합동 교향악단이) 올해 연말 베토벤의 교향곡 제9번 ‘합창’을 서울과 평양에 서 한 번씩 연주하는 것을 가장 원한다”고 말했다.

정 감독은 합동 교향악단의 연주회가 성사될 가능성에 대해서는 “정치적으로는..(잘 모르겠다), 나는 북한 음악가들과 교류하며 음악적으로 확인받은 것”이라며 “

그러나 우리 정부가 이에 대해 반대한다는 소식은 아직 못 들어 희망을 갖고 해볼 것”이라고 밝혔다.

그는 또 조선예술교류협회와 젊고 유망한 연주가를 발굴하고 육성하기로 했다고 전했다.

정 감독은 이번 방북 기간 북한 국립교향악단과 은하수 관현악단의 리허설을 주 재하고, 은하수 관현악단의 단원 7명을 대상으로 오디션을 진행했다. 또 북한 국립 교향악단의 공연도 관람했다.

그는 “리허설을 한 7시간 정도 진행했는데, 기술적인 측면에서 보면 북한 음악 가의 수준은 높다”고 평가하고 “내년에는 젊은 음악가를 모아서 하루 이틀이 아니라 열흘에서 2주 정도 같이 연습하고 연주하고 싶다”고 말했다.

정 감독은 “그동안 북한 음악가를 만날 기회가 여러 번 있었으나, 정치적 문제 로 못 만났다. 그러나 자크 랑 프랑스 전 문화부 장관이 최근 북한 관계자를 소개해 줘서 며칠 만에 방북할 수 있게 됐다”며 “북한에서는 북한의 오케스트라를 어떻게 평가하는지, 또 젊은 연주자와 함께 교류해주기를 원해 나를 초청한 것 같다”고 방 북 배경을 설명했다.

한편, 이날 기자회견에 정 감독과 동석한 김주호 서울시향 대표이사는 방북 기 간 북한의 최고위층을 만났느냐는 질문에 “이번 방문은 민간 차원의 문화예술 교류 가 목적으로, 최고위층을 만난 일은 없었다. 조선예술교류협회 실무자 등을 만났다”며 말했다.

정 감독과 김 대표이사 등은 조선예술교류협회와 남북 문화예술 교류를 논의하 기 위해 지난 12일 3박4일 일정으로 평양을 방문했다.
