Accusations heap on Ailee's nude photo leak
By Park Han-na
The nude photo scandal surrounding Korean singer Ailee took a twist on Tuesday as a U.S.-based Korean pop news site that uploaded them stuck to its story that it had taken the images from an online forum.
On Sunday, allkpop posted a set of nude photos of the 24-year-old singer in an article titled “Purported pre debut nude photos of Ailee leaked,” sending instant shock waves throughout the Korean music industry.
But Ailee’s agency, YMC Entertainment, suggested a different version of how the photos had been distributed.
“The photos were from a camera test shoot for a famous underwear company that Ailee had taken when she was living in the U.S.,” the agency said in a statement.
The agency said the modeling offer turned out to be a fraud and Ailee reported the case to local police. Afterward, she discussed the incident with her then boyfriend Daniel Lee and sent the photos to him as part of their discussions. The agency did not specify when the photos were taken but identified the man as Lee, who is now working as a reporter for allkpop.
YMC’s statement was interpreted as a signal that it suspects Lee might be behind the leak.
In response, allkpop put out another article Tuesday (Korean time). “Although Ailee is a victim, so is Daniel Lee, as false allegations were made by YMC, defaming our employee,” it read.
The U.S. site said an individual claiming to broker on behalf of the owner of Ailee’s nude pictures sent a sample image “for proof” and tried to sell the photos for $3,500 (3.7 million won) in June. Allkpop said it refused to buy the photos and instead informed Ailee’s agency about the offer.
“They (YMC) replied that we (allkpop) were most likely making everything up and brushed it off,” the media said. “We very clearly stated that if the photos were to show up online we would have to write the story as that is our job and duty as a news site.”
While accusations flew across the Pacific, a wave of frantic online searches for her nude photos swept many online communities in Korea and elsewhere, resulting in a wide circulation of the pictures on social networks.
YMC said it would take strong measures against the initial circulator for violating privacy.
Debuting in 2012, Ailee rose into the spotlight with her strong vocal and memorable performances on TV talent show “Immortal Song Season 2.” She released the Japanese version of her hit debut single “Heaven” in Japan on Nov. 6.
