“The Enzis are very famous in Vienna as iconic benches. They exemplify modern design with a laidback concept,” Austrian Ambassador Elisabeth Bertagnoli said in a speech. “Through this event, we want to introduce Austrian art and culture to Koreans. We have many commonalities, such as love of culture and art, technological excellence and innovative enterprise.”

Boasting a rich heritage in music, art and architecture, with a long list of virtuosos from Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss to Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, the landlocked country in the heart of Europe has dazzled the world with cultural treasures.

The number of Korean tourists to Austria has seen a continuous rise over the years, with 280,000 visiting last year. They have participated in various festivities, such as the New Year’s Concert in Vienna and the Salzburg Festival; engaged in outdoor sports -- climbing, kayaking and skiing in the Alps; and savored traditional dishes like Wiener schnitzel (fried pork cutlet) and apple strudel.

In Linz in September, the International Brucknerfest will commemorate the music of Austrian composer Anton Bruckner (1824-1896), inviting over 500 Korean artists. Korea is a partner country this year. 

International luxury brand Swarovski was founded by Austrian Daniel Swarovski in 1895. Based in Wattens, the trendsetting firm produces figurines, jewelry couture, home decor, chandeliers and loose crystal products in vogue and enamored worldwide.

In fashion, contemporary designers, such as Lena Hoschek, Susanne Bisovsky, Carolin Sinemus and Gexi Tostmann, have revitalized folk dress “dirndl,” which has been timelessly worn in Austria, Bavaria in Germany and South Tyrol in Italy. Handicrafts and furniture designed by young Austrian artists have also revived art nouveau, harmonizing natural and nativist aesthetics.

Austria and Korea established diplomatic relations in 1963. The erstwhile Habsburg Monarchy and the Kingdom of Korea signed their first bilateral friendship treaty in 1892.
