The Yeol lecture on March 13 will explore the history of Seoul’s Seochon area.

Speaker Robert J. Fouser will explain how the area between Gyeongbokgung and Inwangsan offers a cross-section of Korea’s development history.

The area was home to noted writers and artists in the early 20th century and heavy building restrictions kept it free of the extensive redevelopment prevalent in the city.

Instead, development was small-scale, populating the winding 1930s street layout with buildings from each period of the last century.

The lecture will explain some of the features of these periods and conclude with efforts to preserve the area. The government last year officially supported the preservation efforts and plans to invest in the area.

While the investment is likely to improve the area, there are some concerns that doing so may erase some of the charm that Seochon developed in the post-Joseon period.

The Yeol lectures take place once a month at the Seoul Museum of History, and attendance is 10,000 won.
