This is a series introducing associations and clubs that expats can get involved in. This week, Expat Living spoke to Hayoung Ponyboy Kim of Busan International Salsa Club. ― Ed.
● Name of Club: Busan International Salsa Club
● Location(s): Seomyeon, Busan
● Number of members: 153 Facebook members, with 30-80 people coming on Saturday nights.
● Started: January 2011
Who is it for?
Anyone who is interested in or wants to dance to Latin music or learn Latin dance -- or people who want to socialize.
What goes on?
There are regular Latin Nights, as well as special theme nights. The next one is a St Patrick’s Day party on March 17.
Our best-known events are our monthly national theme parties. Authentic cooking of each country is served. In April and May we are having a German night and our second Mexican night.
You can check our schedule on Facebook, by going to www.facebook.com/groups/englishsalsa/
We have Latin dance lessons and other dance workshops on genres like K-pop.
BISC has a group called International Friends that connects members from different countries and introduces cultures and languages.
International Friends has also been running Korean and English language lessons.
Plans for the future?
BISC is at Bar Caribe (second floor, 240-23 Bujeon-2-dong, Busanjingu), and both grow together and share resources.
BISC was founded to become the top international community in Busan that introduces different cultures to people and builds friendship through dance and music.
We have had some success in this original goal, and now we are setting up a salsa performance team, including international members, that can compete both at the national level and internationally -- and hopefully become the best.
How to join:
You can just show up on a regular Saturday night in comfortable shoes and clothes. If you want a bit more information before coming, visit our Facebook page and ask to join
Are there any membership fees? No
What is the highlight of the year?
The Caribe Bar Yearly Party & Beach Salsa at Haeundae Beach in late July or early August.
Beach Salsa is a steamy red hot beach festival. We dance in beachwear after swimming at Haeundae Beach. It is not to be missed because other nationwide Salsa and Latin groups also get involved, as well as international visitors.
We also hold a Caribe yearly party, to which we invite International Salsa Champions and National Champion Groups and have a live Latin percussion band and a show by our performance team.
