The Korea Foundation Cultural Center will be holding free open lectures on classical Korean cinema starting Monday.

The films will be screened every other Monday from 12:30 p.m., followed by a talk on the film by professor Earl Jackson.

The first three films are Yu Hyeon-mok’s “Obaltan” (1961) on March 26, Shin Sang-ok’s “Flower in Hell’ (1958) in April 9, and Kim Ki-young’s “Hanyo” (1960), which was recently remade, on April 23.

Based on a novella by Yi Beom-seon, “Obaltan” depicts a North Korean refugee family in late 1950s Seoul. It was banned shortly after its release for its grim portrayal of post-War Korea, but has since been praised.
