April is a cruel month for many Koreans since yellow dust fills the air, causing illnesses.
The Korea Meteorological Administration said two or three intense dust storms originating from Chinese deserts generally hit Korea every year.
“In spring, always be aware of weather forecasts,” a KMA spokesman said. According to scientists, the density of dust in the air during the season is 29 times greater than usual. Particles, including heavy metals, can cause numerous ailments.

“In spring, always be aware of weather forecasts,” a KMA spokesman said. According to scientists, the density of dust in the air during the season is 29 times greater than usual. Particles, including heavy metals, can cause numerous ailments.
Here are some guidelines from the Ministry of Health and Welfare as well as B&Viit Eye Center on how to remain healthy during the dry and dusty season.
1. Refrain from visiting outdoors: If it is necessary, then always cover your skin. Wearing a mask is a good idea. After returning home, always brush off your garments and wash your hands thoroughly.
2. Keep the windows closed: Many people prefer leaving the windows open for ventilation but this is not recommended during the dust storm season. Keep the windows closed and wipe the furniture and other equipment often. Hang wet clothes or laundry indoors for drying to keep humidity at about 40-50 percent.
3. Drink more water than usual: If drinking water doesn’t appeal to you, then try tea or other beverages. Moisture in the body helps the body secrete heavy metals and other harmful substances carried in the air.
4. Do not eat street foods during this time: Foods sold on the streets could be polluted with yellow dust. Store food in zip locks or plastic containers. Put food in cold water for more than two minutes, then rinse gently for another 30 seconds.
5. Wear protective glasses or sunglasses when outdoors: After returning home, moisten the eyes to rinse off tiny particles. Do not rub them. Refrain from wearing contact lens during the season. Blinking frequently could also help overcome dry eye syndrome. Messaging the eye areas could be helpful, too.
