Sotheby's to sell 400-year-old diamond

The 400-year-old ``Beau Sancy,'' one of the world's oldest and most storied diamonds in private hands, is up for sale at Sotheby's auction house. Weighing in at 34.98 carats, the sparkling gem with a rare pear cut is expected to fetch up to $4 million.

For now, the jewel is on display in Paris and will move on to London and Zurich before it gets auctioned off in Geneva on May 14.

``It has a fascinating history, and really is a once-in-a-lifetime sale,'' said David Bennett, Sotheby's jewelry chairman. ``When it was made in the 16th century, the pear cut was new, bold, and so it became the most sought-after jewel of its era. Before the 'Beau Sancy' all diamonds were rudimentary.''

Such was the diamond's fame that in 1604, French King Henri IV purchased it from the first owner, the Lord of Sancy, as a gift for his glamorous wife, Marie de Medici, one of Europe's richest women.

Following the king's murder, she fell into poverty and was forced to sell the jewel, which was cut from the famous gem mines in the Indian city of Golconda.

The diamond eventually made its way through four royal European families, including England's House of Orange. Its most recent owners are the descendants of the last emperor of Germany. (AP)

유럽 왕실을 오갔던 35캐럿 다이아 팔린다

세계에서 가장 오래되고 유명한 다이아몬드 중 하나인 '보 상시(Beau Sancy.아름다운 상시라는 뜻)'가 소더비 경매에 부쳐진다.

34.98캐럿의 이 다이아몬드는 페어컷(서양배 형태)으로 세공됐으며 감정가는 400만달러(약 46억원)에 달할 것으로 보인다.

현재 보상시는 파리에 전시되고 있으며 런던과 취리히를 거쳐 내달 14일(현지시간) 스위스 제네바에서 경매대에 오를 예정이다.

소더비의 보석 경매 담당 총괄인 데이비드 베넷은 "이 다이아몬드는 매혹적인 역사를 가지고 있으며 이번 경매는 일생에 단 한 번 오는 기회"라면서 "보상시가 만 들어진 16세기에 페어컷은 새롭고 대담한 시도였고 이 때문에 보상시는 그 시대 가장 인기 있는 보석이 됐다"고 밝혔다.

보상시는 1604년 첫 주인이었던 상시 경(卿)의 손을 떠났다. 프랑스의 왕 앙리4 세가 아내 마리 드 메디치에게 선물하기 위해 이 다이아몬드를 구매한 것이다.

마리 드 메디치는 유럽에서 가장 부유한 여성 중 한 명이었으나 앙리4세가 암살 당한 후 가난에 허덕이게 돼 보상시를 팔았다.

이후 보상시는 여러 유럽 귀족 가문을 거쳐 최근에는 독일 마지막 황제의 후손들이 보관하고 있었다. (연합뉴스)
