Cho Dong-chan, an infielder for Samsung Lions in South Korea’s top baseball league, will miss the rest of the season due to a left knee injury, local media reported Wednesday.

According to Yonhap News, Cho was diagnosed with a fractured left knee and partial damage to the ligament earlier in the day at Saemyung Hospital in Daegu. Doctors expect the treatment to take six weeks, which will force the 30-year-old to miss the remainder of the regular season.

Cho sustained the injury after he collided with LG Twins’ first-baseman Mun Seon-jae during a home game against the Twins on Tuesday.

The much-anticipated game between the top two teams in the Korean Baseball Organization displayed an abundance of firepower as the No.1 Samsung took the game 16-9.

The 12-year veteran capable of covering multiple positions has hit seven home runs and 53 hits with a 0.240 batting average this season, proving to be a valuable player for the defending champions.

삼성 조동찬 ‘시즌아웃’ 가을 잔치 참여할 수 있을까?



프로야구 삼성 라이온스의 외야수 조동찬 (30)이 무릎부상으로 전치 6주 진단을 받으면서 사실상 남은 시즌 출전이 무산되었다.

조동찬은 14일 대구 세명 병원에서 자기공명상 장치(MRI) 검진을 통해 왼쪽 무릎 골절과 인대의 일부가 손상되었다는 진단을 받았다. 6주 치료 기간에 재활까지 감안하면 잔여 시즌은 물론이고 포스트시즌까지 출전이 불투명해지게 되었다.

삼성 류중일 감독은 진단 결과를 듣고 조동찬의 복귀가 어렵다고 말한 것으로 알려졌다.

한편 조동찬은 이를 두고 “전후방 십자 인대가 안 나간 게 천만다행”이라는 반응을 보였다. 조동찬은 전날 대구구장에서 열린 LG전에서 주루 중 LG 1루수 문선재와 충돌해 부상을 입었다. 문선재는 이후 조동찬에게 전화해 사과한 것으로 알려졌다.

조동찬은 이번 시즌을 정상적으로 소화할 경우 시즌 후 자유계약선수(FA)가 될 수 있었으나, FA선언에 필요한 엔트리 등록일수 (145일)를 채우지 못하고 시즌아웃되면서 이를 1년 후로 미뤄야 할 처지에 놓였다. 1년이라도 어릴 때 가치를 인정받는 게 유리한 운동선수 입장에서는 큰 타격인 셈이다.

LG와 치열한 선두싸움을 벌이고 있는 삼성 또한 롤플레이어로 쏠쏠한 활약을 펼치던 조동찬의 빈자리가 아쉬울 전망이다. (코리아헤럴드)
