The overall sentiment of South Korean consumers slightly worsened from a month earlier in December apparently due to a growing number of people predicting worse economic conditions down the road, central bank data showed Thursday.

The composite consumer sentiment index for December came to 103, compared with 106 the previous month, according to the data from the Bank of Korea.

A reading above 100 means optimists outnumber pessimists.

The index had been on a steady rise since it slipped to a 30-month low of 99 in June, a month after the country confirmed the outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.

The dip in consumer sentiment came as people apparently believe their living conditions have deteriorated over the past months.

A separate index gauging the people's sentiment toward the current economic conditions compared to those from six months came to 75 in December, down from 79 the previous month.

An index measuring the people's sentiment toward future economic conditions also went south, slipping 5 over the cited period to 84, according to the BOK.

The monthly index is based on a survey of 2,200 households throughout the country. (Yonhap)
