연간 외국인 관광객 1천만 시대가 이달 중 열린다.

문화체육관광부와 한국관광공사는 최근 관광객 수를 분석한 결과 이달 20~22일께 올해 1천만번째 외국인 관광객이 입국할 것으로 보인다고 2일 밝혔다.

관광공사 측은 “9~10월 관광객 수가 순조롭게 증가하고 있다”며 “이달 중 사상 첫 1천만명 돌파가 확실시되는 상황”이라고 설명했다.

관광공사가 최근 발표한 자료에 따르면 9월말까지 외국인 관광객의 수는 844만명으로 지난해보다 19% 증가한 것으로 집계됐다.

이 추세라면 연간 관광객은 지난해 979만명보다 크게 늘어난 1천130만명을 기록할 전망이다.

특히 중국 관광객 수는 지난해보다 30.0%나 늘어났으며 일본 관광객도 19.5%의 높은 성장률을 유지하고 있다.

관광공사 측은 “케이팝(K-pop)을 중심으로 한 한류 붐이 관광객 증가에 큰 도움이 됐다”며 “국내 관광산업의 발전으로 다양한 상품 개발이 이뤄진 것도 중요한 요인”이라고 설명했다.

1천만 관광객 돌파가 눈앞에 다가오자 주무 부서인 문화체육관광부와 한국관광공사는 기념행사 준비에 박차를 가하고 있다.

우선 1천만번째 입국자에게는 인천공항 입국장 등에서 별도의 환영식을 진행할 계획이다.

더불어 ‘관광객 1천만 시대 진입 선포식’을 갖고 한류스타와 외국인 관광객이 함께하는 걷기대회와 유명 가수들의 축하공연 등을 다양한 부대행사를 진행할 계획이다.

문광부의 한 관계자는 “1천만 관광객 돌파는 한국 관광산업이 한 단계 올라서는 중요한 사건”이라며 “새로운 도약을 위해서라도 이번 기념행사 준비에 최선을 다할 것”이라고 말했다.

Number of foreign tourists likely to top 10 million

The annual number of foreign tourists to South Korea is likely to exceed 10 million this month thanks to increased Chinese and Japanese visitors, a state-run tourism company said Friday.

According to the Korea National Tourism Organization (KNTO), the number of travelers who visited the country reached 8.44 million in the January-September period, up 19 percent from the same period last year.

The company forecast the figure will surpass the 10 million mark between Nov. 20 and 22, citing more foreign tourists visited South Korea in September and October.

KNTO also said the number of inbound travelers is expected to reach 1.13 million for all of this year, compared with 9.79 million last year.

The company attributed the rise in the number of foreign tourists to South Korea to increased Chinese and Japanese tourists.

In the first nine months, the number of Chinese tourists to South Korea rose 29 percent to 2.77 million from a year ago, with that of Japanese tourists advancing 19.6 percent to 2.16 million.

“A boom in hallyu based on K-pop contributed to the sharp increase in the number of foreign tourists to South Korea,” an official at the KNTO said.

Hallyu, or Korean wave, refers to the popularity of South Korean TV dramas, pop music and films abroad.

The KNTO said it plans to hold a celebration for the 10 millionth foreign tourist to South Korea at Incheon International Airport, the country‘s main gate way. (Yonhap)
