위 문장은 because 로 시작하는 종속절과 주절로 이등분 하면 된다. 우선 앞 부분에서는 외교관이 민감한 협상에서 인내심과 노련함을 보여주었다고 하는데 결정을 내리는데 있어서 어떠했다고 첫 빈칸이 나온다. 이 빈칸에 대한 단서는 뒤에 따라오는 종속절에 있는데 sudden commitment at that time 이라는 표현이 나온다. 인내심이 있는 외교관은 갑작스런 결정을 내리지 않을 테고, 그러므로 앞 빈칸은 결정을 내리지 않았다고 해야 하고, 뒤 부분은 왜 그렇게 결정을 유보한 게 타당한지 설명해 주는 단어가 두 번째 빈칸에 나와야 한다. 이를 충족시켜주는 것은 C 밖에 없다.
