Last week, Sony rebuffed a proposal from hedge-fund investor Daniel Loeb for the company to sell off its entertainment divisions and focus on hardware. Sony Corp.’s curt dismissal of advice from a foreign expert didn’t shock Michael Woodford, the former chief executive officer of Olympus Corp. “Corporate Japan will do everything it can to mask and hide what’s wrong,” said Woodford, a Briton who was ousted in late 2011 after he exposed a $1.7 billion accounting fraud in his own company. The 93-year-old Olympus criticized him for being culturally insensitive. Clearly the non-Japanese CEO didn’t understand the clubby, docile ways of Japan Inc.

지난 주 헤지펀드 투자자인 다니엘 로브는 소니에게 엔터테인먼트분야를 매각하고 장비제조분야에 집중할 것을 제안했지만, 소니는 이를 일언지하에 거절했다. 외국 전문가의 충고를 단번에 무시한 소니의 행태는 마이클 우드포드 전 올림퍼스 CEO에게는 그다지 놀라운 일이 아니다. 지난 2011년 말, 17억불 규모의 올림퍼스 회계부정을 폭로한 후 경질된 영국 전문경영자인 우드포드는, “일본기업은 잘못된 점을 가리고 숨기기 위해 할 수 있는 모든 일을 다 할 것입니다.”라고 말했다. 93년의 역사를 지닌 올림퍼스는, 그가 일본의 기업문화에 무감각했다고 비난했다. 비일본계 CEO인 그가 배타적이며 순종적인 일본의 기업문화를 이해하지 못했던 점은 물론 사실이다.

Such a willful blindness seems to have infected all too many of Japan’s political leaders. Toru Hashimoto, the 43-year-old Osaka mayor who’s often touted as a future prime minister, enraged China and South Korea last week by saying women forced into Japanese military brothels during World War II were needed to provide relief for battle-crazed soldiers. Shockingly, Hashimoto has effectively endorsed rape and sexual enslavement with impunity.

이러한 고의적 진실회피는 이미 너무나 많은 일본 정치지도자들에게 영향을 미쳐버린 것 같다. 차기 총리감으로 종종 언급되는 올해 43세의 하시모토 도루 오사카 시장은 2차 대전 당시의 위안부 강제동원은 전쟁에 지친 군인들을 위한 휴식을 제공하기 위해 필요했었다는 발언을 통해 한국과 중국의 분노를 샀다. 놀라운 점은, 하시모토가 사실상 성폭행과 성노예를 지지했음에도, 지금까지 아무런 처벌을 받지 않았다는 점이다. 

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been equally blithe about affronting Japan’s neighbors. Abe has brushed aside visits that his subordinates made to the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors Japan’s war dead, including several convicted war criminals. 

최근 아베 신조 총리도 똑같이 주변국들을 모독하는 경솔함을 보였다. 그는 지금까지 각료들의 야스쿠니 신사 참배를 용인해왔다. 야스쿠니 신사에는 전범을 포함한 전몰자들의 위패가 있는 곳이다.
