많은 한국 학생들이 TOEFL Listening에서 단어 단위로는 잘 듣지만 숙어에 대한 이해 부족으로 정확히 지문을 파악하는데 어려움을 겪습니다. 다음 지문들을 단순히 눈으로만 보지 마시고 소리 내서 읽어보시면 앞으로 큰 도움이 될 것입니다. 

1. account for: ~의 이유가 되다, 나타내다.
An engine failure accounted for the plane crash. 엔진 고장이 비행기 추락의 원인 이었다.

2. ally with: 동맹이 되다. 연결시키다.
China seeks to ally with the UN to gain international approval.
중국은 국제 승인을 얻기 위해 UN과 동맹을 맺으려 한다.

3. distinguish A from B: A와 B를 구별하다, 분간하다.
I do not think you can distinguish right from wrong.
나는 네가 옭고 그름을 구분할 수 있다고 생각하지 않는다.

4. coincide with: ~과 일치하다.
His favorite sport coincides with mine. 그가 좋아하는 운동은 내가 좋아하는 운동과 일치한다.

5. needless to say: 말할 필요도 없이, 당연히
Needless to say, many Korean students want to be fluent in English.
말할 필요도 없이, 많은 한국 학생들은 영어를 유창하게 하고 싶어 한다.

6. with respect to: ~에 관하여
With respect to your request for a transfer, you must make an appointment with the Dean.
전학에 관한 당신의 요구에 대해서는, 당신은 학장님과 꼭 약속을 잡아야 합니다.

7. make one’s way: 애써 나아가다.
For the past two years, they have made their way to the top of the internet service industry in Korea. 지난 2년간 그들은 한국 최고의 인터넷 회사를 만들기 위해 애써 왔다.

8. inherent in: ~안에 타고난, 고유의, 내재된
There are risks inherent in almost every sport. 거의 모든 스포츠에는 위험이 내재되어 있다.

9. sought-after: 인기가 있는
Recently, women’s mini-skirts are much sought after. 요즘 미니스커트가 많은 인기를 얻고 있다. 

10. in conjunction with: ~과 동시에 일어나는, 협동하는, 부수하는
The FBI is working in conjunction with the MI5 to find militant Islamic extremist groups in London.
FBI와 MI5는 협동으로 런던 내의 급진 이슬람 무장단체를 찾기 위한 조사를 하고 있다. 

11. in any case: 여하튼
It may snow tomorrow, but we are going there in any case.
내일 눈이 올지도 모르지만, 여하튼 우리는 거기에 갈 것이다.

12. in progress: 진행중인, 행해지고 있는
Negotiations are in progress to keep peace in the West sea territories.
서해안의 평화를 지속시키기 위한 협상이 진행 중이다.
