Filipinos gathered in Yeouido by the Han River on Sunday to celebrate the 114th anniversary of Philippine independence and the 17th Migrant Workers’ Day.

The event organized by the Philippine Overseas Labor Office began with Mass, followed by a speech from Philippine President Benigno Aquino read out by Phillippine Ambassador Luis T. Cruz.

“May we also remain proud of our heritage and diversity ― the foundations that distinguish our beloved Philippines,” the speech read.

“Inspired by the past we now move forward to establish the future that accords with our rightful place in the community of nations.”

Lawmaker Jasmine Lee said in a speech that the event was special for her as it was the first time she marked the independence of her motherland as a member of the National Assembly of her adopted land.

“I am determined to do my utmost to help the increasing number of immigrants and multicultural families harmonize, grow and prosper in this society,” she said.

“But as I said it will be with your help. Your continued efforts and compassionate cooperation will make this society a better place. That better place will appreciate our presence as a valuable part of culture and diversity.”

This was followed by a parade by Filipino communities, competitions, raffles and musical performances.

There were also stalls offering assistance with labor issues, preparing to return home and other migrant worker issues.
