LONDON (AFP) - Most people would think twice before buying a boat named Titanic II. And sure enough, when Briton Mark Wilkinson took the 16-foot (4.8-metre) cabin cruiser out for its maiden voyage, it promptly sank.

   "If it wasn't for the harbourmaster I would have gone down with the Titanic," Wilkinson, who had to be fished out of the sea at West Bay harbour in Dorset, southern England, told local media.

   "It's all a bit embarrassing and I got pretty fed up with people asking me if I had hit an iceberg."

   Wilkinson, in his 40s, had only recently bought the boat and brought it by road from his home in Birmingham in central England for its first outing.

   After a successful fishing trip, things started to go wrong when he entered the harbour and the boat began taking on water. Wilkinson was forced to abandon ship and pictures showed him clinging to a rail before he was rescued.

   One eyewitness said: "It wasn't a very big boat -- I think an ice cube could have sunk it!"

    (서울=연합뉴스) 조준형 기자 = 할리우드에서 영화화된 초호화 유람선 타이타닉 호의 이름을 딴 소형 보트가 `오리지널'과 똑같은 운명을 맞았다.

    영국 일간 텔레그래프 6일자에 따르면 40대 영국인 마크 윌킨슨씨는 최근 1천 파운드 정도 가치의 중고 유람용 모터보트를 구입한 뒤 호기롭게 이름을 `타이타닉 Ⅱ'로 지었다.

    `재앙'은 머지 않아 찾아왔다.

    잉글랜드 남서부의 라임만에서 첫 항해를 시도한 윌킨슨씨는 낚시를 한껏 즐긴 뒤 인근 `웨스트 베이' 항으로 들어서면서 봉변을 당했다. 갑자기 섬유유리로 된 선 체에 큰 구멍이 생기면서 바닷물이 배 안으로 밀려 들어온 것이다.

    윌킨슨씨는 물을 빼기 위해 애를 썼지만 소용이 없었다. 배를 집어삼킬 듯한 파 도가 밀려오자 그는 결국 배 앞부분에 매달린 채 간절히 구조를 기다려야 했다. 

    결국 현지 주민이 로프를 던져 보트를 육지에 연결했고, 항만관리인이 배를  조

선대(造船臺.배를 만들거나 수리할 때 배를 올려 놓는 시설)로 끌어 올리면서  윌킨 슨씨는 간신히 목숨을 건졌다.

    비록 상당액의 배 수리비를 물게 됐지만 차가운 대서양에서 숨진 영화 속  주인 공 `잭 도슨(레오나르도 디카프리오 분)'과 같은 운명을 피한 것에 감사하게 된  것 이다.

    윌킨슨씨는 "항만관리인이 없었더라면 나는 타이타닉과 함께 가라앉았을  것"이 라며 "(타이타닉처럼) 빙산에 부딪혔냐고 묻는 사람들 때문에 질려 버렸다"고  말했다.
