The Seoul Metropolitan Government said Thursday it is pushing to ban drinking in public parks starting next year to enhance public health and reduce disturbances.

The municipal government said it submitted to the land ministry last month a proposal of revising relevant law to prohibit drinking

in the city's 2,000-odd parks.

Smoking is not allowed in public parks according to law, but no similar rules exist for drinking.

Reacting positively to the proposal, the land ministry is now reviewing it, the city said, adding it expects the revised law to take effect early next year. 

"It aims to minimize disturbances caused by drunk men and to promote public health," a city official said. "Drinking will be allowed only at snack bars in the parks, and violators will face a fine of 50,000 to 70,000 won." (Yonhap News)

‘공원 내에서 술 못 마시게 된다’

서울시가 내년부터 시내 2천여개 공원에서 음주를 하지 못하게 하는 안을 추진한다.

시는 "시민의 휴식공간인 공원에서 술을 자유롭게 마시는 것은 바람직하지 못하 다는 판단에 따라 내년 시행 목표로 법 개정을 정부에 건의했다"고 5일 밝혔다.

현행 `도시공원 및 녹지 등에 관한 법률'에는 흡연을 단속할 수 있는 규정은 있지만 음주와 관련한 규정은 없다.

이에 따라 시는 지난달 국토해양부에 "서울부터 공원 내 음주행위 금지를 단계적으로 확대할 것"을 건의했고 국토부도 이를 긍정적으로 검토 중인 것으로 알려졌다.

시 관계자는 "음주는 공원 내 음식점에서만 가능해질 것"이라며 "법이 개정되면 길거리 흡연처럼 5만~7만원의 과태료가 부과될 것으로 예상된다"고 말했다.
