A Connecticut man who has been donating blood for 34 years said he has donated a total of 18 gallons in 144 separate donations.

Alan Gittleman of South Windsor, first donated blood to the American Red Cross in 1978 as part of the Bridgeport Jewish Community Center's drive in the name of his father-in-law, who had recently undergone surgery.

He said he has donated about six times per year since his original donation, The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported Tuesday.

"It's the easiest thing you can do," Gittleman said. "It's 10 or 15 minutes out of your day."

Gittleman said reaching his 18th gallon was an important milestone for him because 18 is the numeric value of the Hebrew word for life, "chai." (UPI)

동부 코네티컷 언론은 10일(현지시간) 지난 34년동안 144번에 걸쳐 헌혈을 해온 앨런 기틀먼 씨를 소개했다.

그가 지금까지 기부한 18갤런의 혈액은 석유를 넣는 거대한 드럼통의 절반 가까이를 채울 수 있는 양이다.

기틀먼 씨는 1978년에 그의 장인어른의 이름을 빌려 적십자에 처음 헌혈을 한 이래, 1년에 여섯번 정도 헌혈을 했다고 한다.

“(헌혈은) 가장 쉬운 일입니다. 하루에 10분에서 15분 정도 빼면 되죠”라고 기틀먼 씨는 말했다.

그는 18갤런째 헌혈을 하는 것은 그에게 중요한 의미가 있다고 했는데, 18은 히브리어로 생명을 뜻하는 ‘차이’를 나타내는 숫자이기 때문이다.
