K-pop captivates youngsters of Pyongyang

Even North Koreans are being caught up in the increasing popularity of Korean pop stars across the globe, Radio Free Asia reported.

Idol groups like Girls’ Generation or Big Bang are no longer new to North Korea, where even dance instructors make use of their songs.

A Chinese trading merchant told RFA that he was asked by an affluent woman from the North to get her music CDs of popular group Girls’ Generation.

He also said that the popularity of dancing is ever increasing in Pyongyang, while youngsters who do not know the routines are considered to be “out of fashion.”

A personal dance tutor, who teaches the latest songs and moves, costs about $20 a month, RFA reported.

“Children of the party executives who attend prestigious schools like Kim Ill Sung University have already been enjoying disco music,” an anonymous defector from the North said.

“They prefer western music or disco over stiff North Korean music,” he added, also explaining how people in Pyongyang try to imitate hairstyles from South Korean TV dramas.

방송은 `소녀시대’ `빅뱅‘과 같은 한국 댄스그룹의 이름이 북한에서도 낯설지 않다고 설명했다.

이 무역상은 최근 북한 부유층은 자녀들에게 손풍금(아코디언)이나 기타와 같은 악기보다는 춤과 노래를 가르치려는 경향이 강하다고 전했다.

개별 댄스교습까지 성행해 한달에 20달러를 받고 집과 연습실 등에서 춤과 노래를 가르치는 유명 강사들도 등장했다고 방송은 소개했다. (연합뉴스)
