Brazil judge battling organized crime shot dead

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - A 47-year-old female Brazilian judge known for her efforts to combat organized crime in the Rio de Janeiro area was shot dead near her home early Friday, police said.

Witnesses said unknown masked assailants on two motorcycles intercepted the car of Patricia Acioli, a mother of three, as she was arriving home in Niteroi, located across Guanabara bay from Rio. The attackers fired at least 16 shots.

Acioli's relatives said the judge -- whose efforts targeted organised crime groups in Sao Goncalo, a city adjacent to Niteroi -- had received at least four death threats but was not under police protection.

Investigators were examining video footage from security cameras at Acioli's house as well as her vehicle.

Acioli, who worked in Sao Goncalo, had notably convicted members of armed gangs that are supplanting drug traffickers in some poor neighborhoods, exacting protection money from residents.

Rio authorities are looking to clean up the city ahead of the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, increasing police presence in poor areas.

리우데자네이루 주(州)의 항구도시인 니테로이에서 지난 11일(현지시각) 마스크 를 하고 오토바이를 탄 괴한들이 판사인 패트리샤 애시올리(47)가 탄 차량을 향해 최소 16발의 총탄을 발사했다고 영국 BBC가 현지 경찰 발표를 인용해 13일 보도했다.

애시올리 판사는 그 자리에서 숨진 것으로 전해졌다.

세 자녀를 둔 애시올리 판사는 갱 조직원이나 부패한 경찰 등에게 특별히 단호한 판결을 하기로 유명했다고 BBC는 전했다.

그의 가족은 그동안 그가 수차례 살해 위협을 받았지만 경찰의 신변보호는 없었 다고 밝혔다. 특히 교도소에 수감 중인 의용군 지도자의 소지품에서 처단리스트가 발견됐고 여기에 그의 이름이 오르기도 했는데, 의용군은 비번인 경찰과 소방관으로 구성돼 있다.

브라질 대법원은 애시올리 판사에 대한 공격을 민주주의와 사법체계에 대한 도 전으로 간주하면서 신속하고 철저한 조사를 요구했다.

세자르 펠루소 브라질 대법원장은 성명을 통해 "판사를 대상으로 한 비겁한 범 죄는 사법부의 독립성에 대한 도전"이라고 말했다.

리우데자네이루 주정부는 오는 2014년 월드컵과 2016년 올림픽 개최를 앞두고 폭력 범죄와의 전쟁을 선언한 상황이다.
